  • Dr. Kim is a great guy, I have known him for years and used to rent an apartment from him at one of the many apartment complexes he owns. He has been running the streets of Pattaya just like we do for years and has tried to make sure his hotel was customer friendly.

Everyone can't be satisfied but I know he tries his best to run a clean, well run hotel.

    • I should probably clarify: I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE PATTAYA BAY RESORT. I LOVED LOVED LOVED the Presidential Suite, it was an amazing value, and way I was treated by everyone from the desk staff to Kim the President was exemplary in almost every way.

I had the one gripe that I obviously expressed too strongly on here, as it's the only comment (other than my minimum daily tip) that got remembered, so to correct the record: STAY AT THE PBR! BOOK IT NOW (if you're lucky that is - I had to book months in advance and felt lucky to get it).

Final comment in reply to earlier comment: my problems at checkout regarding the "free night for every 7" had NOTHING to do with my adding an additional day to my stay. That reply/comment isn't pertinent.

      • I will probably pay Pattaya a visit in July.
I will try to sneak away for 2 weeks this time.

I am considering the PBR for my stay. But I need to have some things clarified before making the decision. Maybe fellow BM who have been there can enlighten me:

1- Aircon in rooms: is it always orientated to the bed? Is there a way to prevent the "cold wind", like hanging a towel in front of it for example?

2- Hot water: I read here that the water temperature in the shower is unpredictable. This is something I really hate. Sometimes I just want to stand under a hot shower and relax.

3- the WIFI connection. I read above that SMTP connections were not possible. This is probably because port 25 has been blocked on the router, which doesn't happen by accident.
Stogie, has there been a follow-up on this issue?
Also, as a webmaster, I very much need a working internet connection, with all ports/protocols free, namely ftp, https, pop/smtp and of course ssh.
Maybe I should email the owner about that?

Then I hesitate between the standard and the deluxe room. Trying to weigh out if the the kitchenette is worth 500 baht per day. Are there other advantages for the deluxe room (besides the DVD player and the AM/FM clock which I couldn't care less about)?

My other choices would be Tim Boutique Hotel and LK Renaissance, both at 50 USD / night.

        • I'm currently at the PBR and tip the maid 50 Baht a night. I do it every day so she knows that she is taken care of and I get excellent service.

A maid is like yr housekeeper and you have to treat them very well and it will pay off.

Other comments on the PBR: It's true the aircon is a problem in most rooms I have been in. Either one sleeps under the blanket with 30 degrees outside and the aircon on or weaks up soaked without aircon. My guest last night woke up shivering in the middle of the night.

Another misplanning is the elevator or rather the waiting space as most of the time one enters the lobby from outside, all hot and sweaty, then no time to cool off in the lobby before entering the heat zone again when waiting for the elevator - and those waits can be long at times. It would have been very simple to add another door just before the stairs start and turn that waiting area into a cooling zone.

The showers could do with a bit more pressure and yes, hotter water.

The internet is ok for regular use. But there might be an option to pay a few Baht more and have a higher speed and whatever people might need for work. I dl a lot of stuff - movies, shows, etc. If I stayed long time, I might get a bit frustrated over the speed and sometimes the internet resets which kills most downloads and ... the problem that the electricity shuts down when one leaves the room. 2 keys are a solution and I found another one but it would be simple to keep that one socket out of the shut-down circuit, so one can have the laptop on while away.

But I still love the PBR for being away from the action, being still close to almost everywhere and, and, and ...

          • I have stayed at the PBR many times and always enjoyed my stays. Like Chinaman says usually the main issues which are bearable are the are airconditioner and the lift aread and speed.

However I did have a small problem today. After a big night out and a late night I had the Do Not Disturb on my door. So about 2pm the phone rings and it is housekeeping ringing asking if I would like my room made up

What is it about the do not disturb do they not understand. So I said no please come in a about 2 hours. Then she says I come in 10 minutes and again I said no please come back in a few hours. She says ok and I hang up the phone.

Then the phone rings again and she says ok I come in 20 minutes to which I answer no mar eek sorng chua mohng khrap which means come in another 2 hours and I put the phone down again. At no point was a rude.

Well low and behold 15 minutes later there is a knock on the door. I open it and there is housekeeping

Then whilst cleaning she proceeds to talk to my guest in Thai telling her about my guest the previous day not knowing I could understand. This is when I really started getting annoyed as I had told my guest who is an old friend that I had only arrived that day.

So I think I will be talking to Kim about this episode.

Please do so, Ozzie. He will want to know about it.

I've had similar staff indiscretions which he has dealt with very firmly.

              • @Ozzie

                Wow, that is really bad.
This is definitely something that deserves being rude about!!

The repeated calls are a minor issue, but I imagine if I had witnessed that kind of discussion with my guest, I would have complained immediately to the manager/owner and made big fuss about it.

                • I stayed at the PBR earlier this month for 12 nights.
I found the place ok, no major gripes there. The staff are all friendly, the rooms clean and comfortable.
Like others have stated, the aircon is a bit of pain, but nothing too serious.
I will say however, and this is just my opinion, that I although I would stay there again, it would not be first choice. For similiar money I think the Areca is a much better hotel. Like I said the place is OK and that's all.

                  • well, the Areca is 2-Star standard, allows only one joiner and has no internet.

                    • Can anyone give an update as to their current joiner policy? Are they enforcing it or not? Thanks.

                      • They do NOT have a 'current joiner policy.' Supposedly it is 500 baht if you take TWO LBs back to the room but I have never heard any of the board members (including me) being charged for this, and I've done it a fair few times!

                          • For u late risers that almost always miss the free breakfast:

A guy on one of the str8 forums said you can make a special request to the PBR to skip breakfast and get 100 baht/day knocked of your bill.

                            • Hi all,

I took a couple of girls back the other night and never got asked for a 500 b fee. In fact they even gave me an extra breakfast coupon.

I have stayed here 8 times now and never stay anywhere else. The girls on the front counter are such beautiful souls, Boem the duty manager is a star, and the warmth they treat ladyboys with is worth it alone.

THERE IS NO WALK OF SHAME HERE!!!!

                              • On my first stay in Patts in unfortunately stayed in this establishment. I would not say it was a good move. There was a lot of little annyoing things, like the ac, the water in the shower having it's own mind , the pool kinda sux, don't like the look of the rooms, slow wifi, etc. I had a deulxe room, and for that rate I've had better accommodation in both BKK and the dreaded Shemale Island. So much for the cheapness of Pattaya.

Althoug annoying, this was nothing compared to the reaction I got from the girls after they had asked me about what hotel I lived in. They really seemed dissapointed to hear that I lived there. Like they thought 'oh no, not another one of those pervs'.

That made me kinda almost stop saying where I lived. So the conversation would go like this:
                                'What hotel you stay?'
                                'Not really shure....Pattaya...ummm....Bay...something'
                                'Pattaya Bay Resort?'
                                'Yeah, that's it'
                                'Oh'

Last time I lived somewhere completely elsewhere, payed under half the price, and did not get any reactions like this.
