(stogie bear @ Jun. 26 2008,14:21) In fact the opposite is true... Often times when the chance to charge me for something extra has arisen it has been quietly overlooked.
    Me too.

Late checkout is a half day rate but when I was leaving at 6PM, Kim just waived the charge, a nice good bye gift.

      (daveduke007 @ Jun. 27 2008,13:21)
(Stewart @ Jun. 26 2008,16:00) I gave Areca my cc details in advance of arrival to guarantee the room ie if I do not show up, charge it, and that was clearly stated on my fax. They fucking charged all 5 days 2 weeks before I even arrived!!   Took me months to get my money back.
Obviously knew you were a "Jock"
Fuck, I hadn't thought of that

Kleetora - If you have voluntarily given your card details to someone, the cc company is then in a difficult situation. They can't just automatically take your side, otherwise they would be in the middle of a war everytime someone bought a product they were not 100% happy with.

In this case, the Areca Lodge hotel charged my card without me expecting it, so by the time I found out, the money was in the bank of Areca. You then have to fill in a form and the card company will review it, and they did. But my initial calls, e-mails, faxes to Areca got nowhere...."cannot, money in our account", "cannot too late", "Cannot reverse card transaction".....total f**king bullshit

Location, Location, Location. The PBR does not have it. I stayed 1 night and checked out. Didn't like the walk and won't ride on the back of a motorbike. Particularly a hassle coming back with my guest late at night because of the location.

          Yeah, that location sucks...

A two minute walk to The Avenue and second road, a three minute walk to Stringfellows, A four minute walk to La Bamba and beach road...

Man, after all that leg work I'm too tired to shag!

            Vito-

Was that before Avenue opened? It's now a remarkably easy trek. Get off at soi Yamato/2nd Rd and walk <5 minutes.

I agree with the comments about how helpful the staff are once they get to know you and the good comments about the location but my problem with PBR is that, in both of the rooms I have stayed in, the aircon blows directly onto the bed. I tried all the permutations allowed on the remote control but whatever I did, I still had to sleep in a cold blast of dry air which both times gave me a chest infection. Maybe I am susceptible to chest infections, but the coincidence was too much. Anyway, it was enough for me to regretfully book the Areca Lodge this time which is a inferior hotel in almost every other respect, but at least I am able to breathe!

Continuing from that, the pneumonia rates for tourists in Thailand is apparently incredibly high and I have a strong suspicion that incorrectly positioned air-con is a big contributory factor.

I think you've made a good point there.  I set the aircon in the PBR at 28degC, which sort of works for me ....  cough, splutter ...

Over 30 years ago I was warned to turn down the ac at night. Too many people died from not doing so then.

I turn it off myself, but every year visitors to the tropics get everything from bad colds to full-blown pneumonia from sleeping with the ac on maximum.

I know some folk just can't cool themself, but anything is better than ruining a vacation with a serious chest infection.

Only the strongest antibiotics can treat this condition & with the rise of tuberculosis in SE Asia, it's not worth getting so sick un-necessarily.

Still people insist on coming in from the heat to sleep in freezing rooms & still they are dying from their stupidity.

I think there was a WHO report on this about 20 years ago & the estimated cases of sickness leading to death annually from this were staggering.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

Stay in the mini-suite...there are two aircons with separate controls...one in the sleeping area and one in the living area...

I can understand not wanting cold air blowing on you in the middle of the night, but those who think it is a health concern need to look up the "Germ Theory of Disease." To wit: cold air is not going to give one pneumonia (you need either a bacterial or viral infection to do that).

I find it especially humerous that "sex tourists" are worried about the air conditioner killing them. Come on, the risky thing that all of us are doing is participating in the carnal delights of the Land of Smiles.

I agree with TN_2001 that a causative agent is necessary; however, in Thailand, there are no shortages of these. I suspect that cold dry air blowing on me all night somehow reduces my ability to shake the damn things off before they take hold. Anyway, after ten days in the Areca Lodge I do not have a chest infection c.f. twice in the PBR, I have come out with one.

As for our social activities, sure there's a risk involved but that can be managed and reduced. Aircon / pneaumonia is an uncertainty which by its very nature cannot be managed and so I prefer to avoid the possibility if possible. And I assure you, as a diver, a good chest infection is a quicker way to meet my maker than all the galloping knob rots put together!

I received by e-mail today about their pick-up service.
Just a shame they didn't do the same for an actual reservation request
