I never saw this as a problem because I always got my deposit back. ( in 1000 bath notes). And giving a tip depends on you. I always do unless someone behaves very rude.

This hotel never asks credit card details in advance or if you don't show up a one day room rent. Go to bangkok and try to find the same. Good luck. Some hotels even let you pay by credit card in advance and ask a security amount as an extra. ( which you get back of course but is far higher than Bay Resort)

Also if 1000 bath deposit is such a problem for you I would stay at home or do a real budget holiday instead. Might be a better idea than nagging about a deposit or being forced to almost give a tip ( which I doubt by the way)

I have gone to BKK on rare occasion...But you don"t know me so how would know that...

I usually stay at the DIG...sometimes for 2 or 3 months each trip...

They have never ever asked for a deposit or payment up front...I pay in arrears every 7 days...

Read my post...I did pay up front at the PBR and still paid a 1000 baht deposit...And if returning the money to me in "little money" is not trying to shame me into giving them a tip, then you are  even more fucking stupid than you appear...And why should anyone leave a tip...because they spent 5 minutes checking me in and 2 minutes checking me out...Duh....That's their fucking job...

So we're even...you think I'm being cheap and I think you're a fucking stupid idiot...

This thread isn't a forum for debate about the pros and cons of this hotel...it's a review...Stewart and I  have every right to tell others what we don't like about this hotel...You like it, go...Frankly I don't give a rat's ass what you or Mr Bentdick says or does...It's my money I spend it my way...You can both spend your money any way you like as well...

The comments quoted below were taken directly from the hotel owner in an email reply I got a few minutes ago...

Thanks for forwarding on the comment below and yes we do care about guests comments and take them seriously.

We do require a security deposit of 500.00 baht per night, capped at 3,000.00 Baht, in addition to our room payment in cash or guarantee thereof with a credit card.  This is posted on our web-site and explained in writing to every guest who makes an internet reservation with us.  Sometimes it may be invisible to the guest if they are paying by credit card as it is not processed as a transaction against the card unless needed.

The purpose of the refundable security deposit is many; We leave our telephones open and a guest can call anywhere in the world.  Guests can sign for food and beverage in the restaurant and can order room service without having to use cash.  They can also send their laundry out and charge it to their room account.

We use a sophisticated key entry system with laser cut keys that cannot be duplicated, a digital access card and a micro chip electric card.  If these are lost, it costs us 1,000.00 baht to change the lock and replace and program out the cards.  Guests seem to lose their keys about once per month.

Finally, it is an insurance policy against room damage.  Although this is rare, it does happen.

I am sorry about the return of the guests deposit in a manner which was interpreted as soliciting a tip.  Our staff have been instructed as to never solicit tips.  Generally, we do return the money in a leather folder instead of handing it across the counter and the majority of our guests ask for change or small money for their on-going transportation, expenses, etc.

You can interpret this answer in anyway that you want to. For me, it seems to answer each point of contention clearly. The fact that readers for this message board have gotten a full and explanatory response speaks volumes, also. Tell me another hotel where the owner would take the trouble to read and respond to farang criticisms... I can't think of one.

Anyway - I'm biased in favor of the hotel so my opinions don't count, but there are the facts laid out...

I hope that anyone reading this will interpret the opinions and facts contained in these postings correctly and stay at The Pattaya Bay Resort.

Frankly, I can't imagine staying anyplace else.

Also - this is a budget hotel, not a Marriott. It's really not fair to compare the two. Two people can stay at the Pattaya Bay Resort for 50 pounds each a week! This includes breakfast and a host of other freebies such as water, soaps, toothbrushes, towels and above average service from English speaking staff. People on the dole could afford to live here!

Hope that clears up a couple of points. Stewart's comments about the reduced enthusiasm to provide good service where a deposit or prepayment has been made seems appropriate for Pattaya but NOT for this particular hotel!

I am looking forward to stay in PBR. And after the boss has explained the reasons for deposit, it seems ok to me. Definitely better than being asked to sign an open charge for your credit card.

Got it sorted , pack the job in , get the dole to pay for my room at the Pattaya Bay Resort and sell the big issue on the streets of Pattaya .

I knew I'd come up with a bright idea one day , if its good enough for the Romanians its good enough for me ....

I have stayed here too, and there is no doubt that it is very good value for money.

The deposit thing can be seen in different ways. Here they take it in cash, if you pay in cash, but leave the credit card open as they do in nearly everyother hotel in the world, so whats the problem.

Stew: I expect the Marriott cebu did not pre-charge you but can guarantee they asked for a credit card on checking in, and then later that night got an amount on that card.

Sherif: I realise that you are only trying to be as infuraiting as possible, as you did on the other site. Problem is that you are picking on the wrong BMs here.

Hope SB doesnt see it...

Like the famous old greek philosopher you know yourself so well and being bored by that you thought I like to start on the sherif. I must disappoint you it doesn't work that way with me. Many gunslingers tried and they all failed. Use bad language, shout at me , call me boy or try to be funny on my account no problem. I will explain that to you my greek friend. Especially because you are an expert philosopher on the inside of people's feelings. First being a member on this forum is just fun, secondly if members like to spit on me they only spit on themselves and never on me. Stewart and Kahuna are just two who come in mind and don't realize this. They got their freedom of speech and a nice answer. If they cannot take that they shouldn't post anymore. They never listened to Stogie's advice to simply ignore. If stogie decides to kick me out (which I doubt because for example I don't use dirty language) he should feel free to do so. But then I would have my doubts about his advice. Even if he would ban me no hard feelings.Why? It is not the end of the world .
I realize some members hate my guts but they can only blame themselves. For me this is a game maybe for them it is their life. Or they get frustrated by not finding the correct answer and ending up in a kind of mind game.
The Duke is a classic example. And I feel happy that I can help to make his daily life so interesting. I bet he is waiting on my next post. Then he can choose one of his funny cartoons and a famous one-liner. And he really jumps for joy when I start answering that.

The main point that needs clarification regards early checkout.

If one pays upfront for two weeks and pays the security deposit what happens if one checks out after a week?

Or what if one doesn't pay upfront but checks out early, will the security deposit be used for this?

Lots of reasons one might want to check out early such as finding a sweetie and heading to Ko Samet or avoiding a ladyboy stalker.

Low season rates are outstanding but the low-high differential greater than most Pattaya hotels.

I was treated very well here and think Dr Kim runs a good ship.

Some good points by PigDogg and they all relate to the fact that when in Thailand we expect to be ripped off or at least taken advantage of.

Most people who have stayed at The Pattaya Bay Resort will find these fears unfounded.

Credit cards are not required to make reservations so you won't pay upfront for a stay there.

I've stayed there many times, and will be going back.  At 999 baht it is great value for a standard low season room - confirmed by the fact that the hotel is usually fully booked.   All hotels I've ever stayed take a credit card print on check-in.  The cash security deposit is a bit of an oddity, but I really can't get worked up about it.  

No 'tip' has ever been solicited from me at the PBR (overtly or otherwise), but occasionally I leave one if I have had very good service.   For example, on my latest stay I had an agreement with the maid that she would service my room every morning when I went for breakfast.  And she gives me an extra towel or two ...  if I plan to shower rather a lot during the day  

Any minor criticisms (yes, there are a few) are usually put right very quickly .... OR, as in this latest complaint .... by a full explanation from Kim.

I would not have a problem paying them a deposit at all, some of the other Hotels I've stayed at take a credit card paper slip off me as security then rip it up in front of me on departure ( Areca Lodge, Majestic Suites, DIG etc ).
The only problem I have is that the PBR have not replied to my request of reservations by E-mail 3 times now, OK I know they had problems with the first time but the last two
Anyway it does not matter as I'm hooked on that whirlpool bath at the LK Renaissance now and looking forward to some fun in it

That's what I recommend to my high end friends.

2 Guys Guesthouse for low end guys, 500 baht includes one very good all day breakfast.

PBR for everyone else (in the low season).
