Always nice to get a lecture on Soul music sir ,
Ive been collecting soul 45s since I was 16 ,( 20+ years )
Been DJing since I was 18 .
So how do you define soul ?
Duffy is a fan of the Northern /rare soul scene and is influenced heavily by it , she sings from the heart so in my book thats soulful .
By the way do you want your Ted Taylor tracks on Okeh DJ copy or just standard purple label .
Cheers
First my post was never intended to be a lecture. Just an eye opener to something I missed in the whole discussion. And if Duffy is soul into your book why not. To me she is not. She can be entitled into northern soul ok does that give an artist soul? I don't think so. Being touched musically by an artist gives the artist soul. I'm not not touched by her singing. Of course she looks great but does that make her skillful in singing difficult to answer for me. Like you I've been into popular music when I was 15 years old. For 15 years I was a fanatic in collecting music ( including the whole crap about labels and Dj copy or first pressings). But I 'll be honest to answer your question about purple label or dj copy. As long as you ask other peoples into music these questions you don't see. It is the music and not a purple okeh label ( although it proves you know the okeh label) or Dj copy single. The message is the music and not the medium ( lp, single, cd, video or I pod)
Now I'm 45 years old and I've seen so many artists coming and going like duffy. I always learned ( and not being teached) that if you like a certain type music please check out the roots of that. You will rarely be disappointed but instead get joyful memories or new music you never knew that existed. But Jim up to you. I think for a person who claims he has lived no problem.
You ask me what is soul music to you? I cannot answer that because I never put music into categories. My taste is wide like food ( do you put your food into categories)
The only thing about music is being touched by it. You maybe touched by Duffy. Good for you. I listened to her cd but I was not touched. Everywhere she gets great reviews. Good for Duffy. Beyonce ( another one without soul in my opinion) gets great reviews too. Can someone sing or mention a song in 10 years. I have my doubts. I only know I like music when it touches you. Even in thailand I liked some of the Isaan music although I didn't understand the words some of it I liked without putting it into categories.
But some thai lb friends liked my I pod music ( asking what is this) some they simply hated the farang music. Does that make them good or bad persons Mr Slim? I don't know and not care. I'm not a teacher simply because I never liked the word teaching ( all teaching comes out of a book and is rarely based on learning). I prefer instead learning ( because learning is mostly based on your own experience) and in music it works the same for me. The artists I mentioned were just a few , there are many more but I think other members should do their own digging too. Although some information members have been digging up already is very good. The soft cell discussion shows some menbers are into roots very deeply and that Ben can only encourage.
Take care Ben

I think a lot of this is lost in translation so I think we agree we all like different music. I'm sure many people do not think the Blue Nile would come under the category 'soul' (there's that label thing again) but by Ben's yardstick they must be sould because they 'touch me musically'. In fact, I think they are among the finest artists to walk God's planet but I wouldn't expect anyone else to like them just cos i think they are the mutt's nuts.
I enjoy OA, Jim and Naang's observations on music and while some of them I can take or leave, I can see the value in all of it. Certainly, one's admiration and love for a certain style, type, mood of music should never be used as a pissing competition.
Jim's question about the label was, in my opinion, a fun question from a guy who knows his stuff - almost like Not the Nine O'Clock News' hi-fi shop sketch (Do you want woofers with your tweeters?) which i am sure NF will remember with a grin on her sexy chops.
I have never worked in a record store nor been a DJ but I have worked in the media for over 20 years and even won Radio 1's Quiz Kid back in the day when David Jensen was really a Kid. It doesn't make me any smarter than anyone else - maybe I am just anal at remembering shit - but it does help me win pub quizzes.
As for an artist having value if you can 'sing and mention a song in 10 years', hell I can do plenty and I am sure you'll be placing your size 9s in the stirrups of your musical high horse when I start singing Plastic Bertrand's 'Ca Plane Pour Moi'...

(Grinder @ Apr. 27 2008,23:27) There you go everyone, it is not allowed to like Duffy. Shame on you.
And I'm sure most of the brothers on this forum would be keen to know which bars we can find Etta and LaVern aka the ladies with balls
Finally, Ben, I'm gathering you are not a big admirer of Stephen 'Tin Tin', Dallas star Patrick or former Dundee manager Jim...
You missed my point completely. I never wrote not allowed. I simply wrote she is a fake to me. Reading seems to be difficult for you. So please do us all a favour before you like to put a shame on a forum member read posts carefully and not act like this or even trying to be funny. You are not funny but simply boring to me if you write posts like this.
About your nice remarks about some singers I mentioned. If you or your so called brothers feel the urge to visit them I must disappoint you they don't work in a bar so here is the information:
La Vern Baker died in 1997
Etta James is still alive and touring the US occasionally.
I hope you find your peace of mind in careful reading instead of putting shame on people
Take care Mr Grinder

Life must be a barrel of laughs round your house pal.
Ladies with balls? On a ladyboy forum? Get it? No? Sorry - just my way of helping the day go by.
FYI Etta James takes up a fair amount of space on my I-pod...
The more I listen to Jeremy Clarkson, the more I agree with him.
