I think a lot of this is lost in translation so I think we agree we all like different music. I'm sure many people do not think the Blue Nile would come under the category 'soul' (there's that label thing again) but by Ben's yardstick they must be sould because they 'touch me musically'. In fact, I think they are among the finest artists to walk God's planet but I wouldn't expect anyone else to like them just cos i think they are the mutt's nuts.
I enjoy OA, Jim and Naang's observations on music and while some of them I can take or leave, I can see the value in all of it. Certainly, one's admiration and love for a certain style, type, mood of music should never be used as a pissing competition.
Jim's question about the label was, in my opinion, a fun question from a guy who knows his stuff - almost like Not the Nine O'Clock News' hi-fi shop sketch (Do you want woofers with your tweeters?) which i am sure NF will remember with a grin on her sexy chops.
I have never worked in a record store nor been a DJ but I have worked in the media for over 20 years and even won Radio 1's Quiz Kid back in the day when David Jensen was really a Kid. It doesn't make me any smarter than anyone else - maybe I am just anal at remembering shit - but it does help me win pub quizzes.
As for an artist having value if you can 'sing and mention a song in 10 years', hell I can do plenty and I am sure you'll be placing your size 9s in the stirrups of your musical high horse when I start singing Plastic Bertrand's 'Ca Plane Pour Moi'...
