  • (jimslim @ Apr. 28 2008,19:55) Hi Ben ,

I think you are missing the point here , the Duffy track is a great tune and has a soulful vibe and combined with a cool video fits nicely into this thread .

I met Duffy through a mate who DJs for her , and shes cool , loves soul music , is she gonna be the new Etta James or Aretha Franklin ? I think she would laugh at that , of course she isn't even in that league .

Your point about the roots of soul music did come across as a lecture even if you did not intend it to be that way , my reply about the Ted Taylor tracks (record labels , demo's and all ) was a little lighthearted dig to let you know that I do know my stuff when it comes to soul music , as does Naang Faa and Orgasmaddict and others who post in this thread .

When we are on the subject of Ted Taylor check out - Somebodys always trying- on the Okeh label (label and issue up to you   ) this track is pure R&B groove 2 mins 30 seconds of pure class , you will love it .

If you love soul music check out www.soulsource .com , a site for people like me who are fanatical about soul and probably need medical help (what ! you spent how much on a record !)

    Keep the faith brother
    Hello Mr Slim

Thanks for the information and the link. Really enjoy this. I once needed medical help too according to some of my friends when I told them what I spent on a record. I used to be an addict but I guess I'm cured now ( I hope). Four years ago collecting became an obsession. So at that point I had to stop. I realized it was not the music anymore but just craving for a record. And craving is the worst situation a person can get into. (You travel around europe and come into shops you can hardly call a shop hoping to find another obscure single or lp ).Sold my collection and kept the music on cd's. I still love to play the music but I hope you understand collecting became too much.
Of course I saw in previous posts that you and some other members mentioned know their stuff. Amazing that even some people in thailand know so much. My
I pod I take with me is sometimes an eye opener to thai lb's or girls. One thing I learned is that the smart or sweet ones dig this music but strangely some who think they are superstar thailand became agressive or ignorant. (One superstar told me : me only listen to isaan music so take I pod away now/ great laugh on that one). Like I said before only experts know this. It is lovely to see how people are involved in this and enjoy it. Don't take my opinion on Duffy too serious. It is the same with food you decide what you like to eat and nobody else. If you get touched by it enjoy it and do not worry about what your friends or I or another forum member tells you
I was just teasing a little and who knows maybe I restart listening to Duffy and finally dig her. I'm not a fanatic ( saying you can only listen to this and to that) anymore but instead try to have an open mind. Again I enjoy your discussions on music.

    Take care Ben

        Hello Mr Slim

Lovely photo and I see you keep the good work going. I do the same in THailand. The I pod is a great invention for this work. Many lb's dig Sam Cooke ( what he is they ask me, great fun or please bring me cd which I do sometimes). Some even go crazy by Boom Boom ( John Lee Hooker / no soul music but great to see their face when they hear this song).
Another killer in any karaoke is stand by me ( easy to sing and great fun). Never do get back by the beatles at a karaoke unless you want an army of lb's after you.

Take care and again keep informing people about this music.

If you search back a few posts/days, you'll see that I cited Adele after we started talking about Duffy. Good to see new artists that are developing without the need to go down the X Factor route.

                          Hello Mr Grinder

One remark for you (naught boy) and your (girlfriend??) mr clarkson:
It is easy to see the faults of others
but difficult to see one's own
the faults of others you shift like a husk
but conceal your own, like a deceitful gambler
conceals a bad roll of the die

I rather stick to that then the complete works of Guru Clarkson. Even the germans agree after Mr Clarkson remarks on them

                          Again take care

                          Ben

I can still pull off a few moves like that

Naang Faa back me up here girl , I know I was wearing trainers and there was no talc on the Guess bar floor , but you could just tell I still got the groove , couldn't ya

Once I finally work out how to post youtube clips , I will add a few , bear with me it should take a year or 2

                            Hello

Duffy is fake and has nothing to with soul. In two years she is like joss stone doing the same over and over again.
Than better listen to Miss Winehouse ( at least she does what she likes and not always thinks about her carreer. At least that gives her credit )
Stick to the real ones and I miss a few if you are in soul music so just a few to mention :
Sam Cooke ( made marvin gaye piss in his pants and let major lance look like a little schoolboy)
James Brown ( Why nobody mentions him??Already forgotten the godfather of soul and instead look at Duffy)
Etta James ( why they are planning to make a movie about her because she was fake, no because she has balls)
Aretha Franklin ( had a crush on Mr Cooke)
Otis Redding ( He beated Mr Jagger on satisfaction)
Ray Charles (again a movie about do you think duffy gets a movie)
                            Martha Reeves
OV Wright ( who knows him???)
                            Solomon Burke
Sugar Pie de Santo (half filipino/ stunning looks and a great lp on chess records/ She can sing)
Chris Clark ( Berry Gordy's white girlfriend but this girl could sing/ love's gone bad on motown a great single or try her motown lp some nice and two real stupid songs)
LaVern Baker (again a lady with balls who even impressed Elvis)
Irma Thomas ( Mick and Keith nicely took time is on my side from her and called themselves the glimmer twins )
Arthur Alexander ( you better move on / soldier of love)
Ted Taylor ( ramblin' Rose and not the stupid Nat King Cole song/ some might known this song from MC5)

If you like artists with the name of Duffy. Try this one Duffy Power ( and he is a male singer) I saw her standing There on parlophone records shortly released after the beatles version. Paul McCartney always liked this version and was amazed why this singer recorded it . Strange but nice blues version.
So please wake up and dig up your record collection to become aware and mindful again. I always do the same instead of walking the oxen path.

                            Ben
