This thread has pissed me off quite a bit actually!!

This person in question acted as a member of the public to intervene in a domestic dispute.
His actions have nothing to do with the volunteer police force other than his stupidity of wearing a uniform in an attempt to justify his actions down at the police station.

I don't see why this incident has been hijacked and used agenda for bashing these volunteers.

This has nothing to do with them - period.

I will say it again, foreign volunteers should be well dressed, and their to give out advice and act as mediators between Thai police and tourists.

They should not be dressed as paramilitaries, blocking the entrance to walking street with a police van, and strutting around town with pepper spray.

I agree with Snick here - all along i have suggested they can add value to situation in Pattaya and elsewhere in LOS - its just a matter of finding the right balance.

Using an open forum to slag off these guys is not a bright idea at all - I'm really surprised that so many members haven't thought this through a little more and continue adding fuel to the fire.

Would you feel the same in your own country- you seem very quick to defend/vindicate his actions?  For Johnstroud - he is NOT an 'off duty police man', he is a volunteer, NOT a cop. Well that in itself is a very stupid and dangerous thing to do. In fact it is SO stupid that I cannot believe he actually did this.

And even if this actually happened and he "intervened in a domestic dispute" at what point would he have thought to himself that it was OK to resolve this affray by bringing out the pepper spray?

Anyone who has been to Pattaya even once would know better than to go and try to sort out some Thai dispute in the early hours of the morning. Anyone sober that is!

These testosterone loaded commando wannabes should be disbanded at once. They are NOT needed and in any event tend to fuel the fires rather than extinguish them.

It's unbelievable that there are people here who are rising to the cause of these idiot thugs and telling us seasoned whore mongerers that it's OK to barge in and pepper spray your way out of a violent situation which you helped cause!

There is a place for farang volunteers to help out in disputes between Thais and tourists. There is no place for disgruntled hooligans in bomb squad gear to abuse their positions and spoil peoples holidays.

Send these idiots back to Jomtiem where they can spend their pathetic pensions screwing up their own lives and leave us visitors alone.

Stogie you've made a series of statements but respectfully i think you are failing to carefully consider all the facts.

NO one except maybe Jon stroud is condoning the actions of this individual.

From my perspective that exactly whats wrong with the world we live in - people stand idly by and let bad deeds go unpunished as we are generally too fearful to take a moral stand.

The use of pepper spray or whatever this bloke did was outrageous and Thai police should take action due to this part of his actions.

Anecdotal evidence it would appear this guy is couple of cans short of a six pack - such as life - but i won't condemn the guy for doing the right thing and stepping in to help solve a situation.

I hope you & anyone else here are never in a situation where the lack of action by a member of public puts you in harms way.
God forbid we end up in a society that is so dis functional that they only care for themselves and not their fellow man.

When its Thai against Thai in Thailand, and a Farang intervenes, often it is the case that the 2 parties turn on the Farang.

This is why intervention is not really the way to go.

I didn't mention the dangerous part of Stogie comments for that very reason - I'm sure everybody would agree intervening in a Thai vs Thai dispute has its own distinct perils as does any interventionist action.

And given that - i think anyone who is knowingly aware of such perils and is prepared to act in total disregard to ones self interest should never be so readily cut down by all and sundry.

well, the tourist police volunteer site states:

"...Volunteers understand that being a volunteer is to assist the work of a police officer and not act on behalf of a police officer
Volunteers should not be involved in activities such as arrests, interrogations, investigations or inspections..."

so it sounds like this guy was not assisting a thai police officer and was out of jurisdiction.

these guys are another form of globalistion. now thailand is strewn with americas fast foof and fast coffee joints, now we even get there policeman-to the-world-syndrome.

write to any and all of these stating how they ruined the image of thailand on your holiday and youre not coming back.

I respectfully disagree and would urge other board members reading this to stay well clear of Thai people when they are having a disagreement amongst themselves.

YOU do not understand their situation no matter what you think you are seeing.

What on earth do you hope to achieve? You can't mediate, you can't separate the protagonists and you can't end the dispute!

In places like Pattaya these fights are often fueled by drugs and booze and are probably the result of long standing simmering disputes.

You would not be welcome by either party in these situations and the very thin veneer of Thai serenity would be turned on you in a heartbeat and it would be a fight you would never win and it may possibly even be the last fight you ever have.

You are NOT Thai. You do NOT understand them... Do yourself a favour and stay out of their business...

If you want to be a hero in a 'dysfunctional world' donate time and/or money to a needing and worthwhile charity and resist the urge to cure the ills of the crappy low lives that infest Pattaya.

As anecdotal evidence to support my instinct for self preservation (and general cowardice!) I would like to remind you about the English lady tourist in India who, about ten years ago, rescued a baby that was drifting out into a river where Indian women were doing their laundry.

Without a second thought she waded into the water and retrieved the baby but sadly it had drowned. The lady tried mouth to mouth and beating the baby's chest but it was beyond saving.

Within minutes the Indian women on the riverbank having witnessed the whole thing had beaten the English tourist to death for having deliberately drowned the baby...

Wandered by the boys last evening about 11:30 and they only had one
ladyboy under arrest...I'm sure they were all disappointed with such a
slow night...

Walked out about 2:30 and the crowds had thinned and the street was

Why they arrest the girls early in the evening and then allow them later in the
evening/morning is indeed puzzling...

I met this guy (Paul Harrison- did not know then he was a rent a cop) in a bar in Soi 8, sitting there telling me his tales about how he was ex special forces and all about his training...........bullshit
I told him he was talking through his ass and asked him to clarify a couple of things...guess what he could'nt so he got all upset and fucked off....probably to pepper spray a passing baby
