This last trip I spent nearly 2 weeks with a girl and her family in Yasothon...about 120k north of Surin...

What I observed is that they live in the past... they hardly think about today except for where to get food and a place to sleep for the night...they rarely recognize that there is or will be a tomorrow...

They are deeply grounded in the past...If they spent as much time looking for work and how to make a baht as they do praying to dead ancestors, they would all be rich...

How right you are about the rural areas of Thailand and many other areas of the world.

A country that is steeped in tradition by simply adoring it is bound to be unambitious...

...but The prostitutes' life in Thailand also serves the very ambitious and forward thinking of Thais as well. While your generalization is spot on, it's probably worth pointing out that many bar girls have also made incredible changes for the better with the spoils of 'the game.'

Dont get me started on this subject - its all to do with the 'have a lots' who dont want the 'have nothings' to get on in life, and thus reducing their labour pool of cheap exploitive labour.     Its not rocket science is it?

This is what stems from the 'educated' elite wanting to keep land ownership to Thai's (despite most of the country being acquired by second, third, fourth generation immigrants from China and India), poor education levels, even poorer subsistence farming in the countryside (notice how Thailand is the worlds biggest exporter of Rice and premium rice products yet the guy who grows it cant afford to live??).    This is a complex area and I speak as someone who has always been right wing in the political arena, but blimey, this country takes it to way new levels.  


And of course, the funniest thing is the political desire to keep Thailand for Thai's (Thai Rak Thai ring any bells), when the entire elite of that party is actually Chinese Thai The poor suckers who vote for them have been totally mislead about ever improving their lot.

Unfortunately you don't have to display any level of intelligence in order to qualify to vote. It's a fault of the electoral system that needs fixing.

The Thai Rak Thai party swept to power on a hamper of sandwiches and Coka Cola.

In essense the rural population will believe that you have a "good heart" and will work hard for them if you give them something either shiny like a badge or a plate of cold rice and duck.

When you are both ignorant AND stupid you are doubly cursed... but invariably happy!

My girl friend hated Thaksin and the fact of their vote buying, her dad (RIP) would vote TRT because of the 300 or 400 baht they handed out and she would become infuriated with him about it.

Love, lust or whatever you want to call it is a funny thing - a friend of mine once called it a "temporary state of insanity". While poguemahone had a bad outcome it would have been nice to see him "strike the lottery" and have a happy marriage. Yes the odds are against having a permanent relationship with a p4p lady, whether gg or bg. Despite all the warnings, unhappy stories (many written on the forum), guys will continue to try and maybe someday we will see that 1 in a million happy ending.

When we wish good luck, it doesn't mean we are nodding someone on to the path of doom! It is simply we wish him good luck that it will work out, even though the odds are against him.

This was not the first time PM has been burned by the way, so it isn't like he was a newbie either.

I am sure we will read many more stories like this on the forum before we will read about a success.
