    Suvarnabhumi closed

More political problems - CNN has update this report from Bangkok Post - outgoing flights are cancelled, incoming flights are still ok for now.

(BangkokPost.com) - The anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) on Tuesday evening announced that it will shut down Suvarnabhumi airport in an attempt to topple the government.

At 9pm, the airport was ordered to halt its operation temporarily as the PAD demonstrators broke into the compound.

Later, PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul announced at the anti-government stage at Government House that Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat must resign without any condition.

He then claimed that the government was guilty of the October 7 riot, which left two dead and almost 500 wounded.

Mr Sondhi said the demonstrators will intensify their acts of 'civil disobedience' by closing down Thailand's international airport.

I think the airport managers must be sympathizers as this is a complete over reaction...

"I decided to shut down services after the protesters broke the door on the fourth floor of the terminal and stormed into the departure lounge. I had no alternative,"

A few people show up to the airport and there's chaos!  Hmmm...

          From CNN:
          Reports: Protesters disrupt Bangkok airport
Thousands of anti-government protesters partially shut down Bangkok's international airport today. All departing flights were canceled after the protesters broke into the passenger terminal, the director of the airport said. Protesters carrying golf clubs clashed with airport taxi drivers, with both sides throwing objects at each other.

Bangkok's international airport has been closed after anti-government protesters surged into the main terminal building.

The operator, Airports of Thailand, say they have shut down the Suvarnabhumi airport indefinitely.

A spokesman said:"We have already informed the airlines who operate from it.

"Flights in the air will be diverted to either Chiang Mai, Phucket or other airports, but it closed as of 9pm (2pm GMT)."

British Airways told Sky News that one flight to Bangkok had already been canelled and another flight had been diverted to Singapore.

A BA spokesman said the decision was regrettable, but the deteriorating situation in Thailand had left them with little choice.

At least 2,000 supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) had surrounded the airport as part of their six-month campaign to oust the government.

Police Colonel Theeradej Chanurak, a senior police official responsible for the airport, confirmed that protesters then entered the terminal.

He said: "Some of the protesters have entered the terminal buildings.

"They walked towards it while police tried to stop them but could not do anything as police have received orders not to use any force."

stogie mate i dont think id feel too happy about boarding a plane for a long flight knowing that, every tom ,dick and thai is free to roam around the airport, especially when bombs and grenades have recently been going off in BKK.closeing its the responsible thing to do.
Thailands gota sort itself out,at the moment its on a route to more unrest, loss of confidence by external investors, tourism downturn and possible economic downturn.it aint good.especially when it dosnt have to be that way.certain places in BKK are prime targets(and oh so easy ones at that)for terrorist actions.stability must be found before any worsening ensues.

I wouldn't be put off - assuming your flight isn't cancelled

I've been in BKK before during coups and not noticed a thing

Just in case, grab yourself a nice soft LB body and cuddle up to her in bed for a week and don't leave the room. It's the only safe option - trust me
