  • (pacman @ Jul. 11 2010,02:37) I must have missed something. I did try to watch The Big Lebowski on TV but the combination of an unappealing lead character, the slovenly Jeff Bridges, plus those weird dream sequences, & I found the whole thing irritating.

Not that I have conventional tastes, some of the movies I mentioned on this thread, I went to pains to not recommend them.

All is not lost though, I have since become a big fan of the Coen brothers. But I still get to decide which I like & which I don't. e.g. Fargo - excellent, No Country for Old Men - good thriller with a subplot that was indecipherable.
When you say you watched it on TV, do you mean network TV or a movie channel such as Showtime or HBO where the entire movie runs unedited and uninterrupted?

If it were the former, I'd never use a version edited for network TV, broken up with commercials, as a fair way to judge a film.

    • (Jake_Sully @ Jul. 11 2010,02:06) How could someone hate a movie that only says the word "fuck" 400+ times. I mean just look at pulp fiction or the departed.
How could anyone be so obsessive compulsive so as to count the number of times the word "fuck" is used?

Or was that just a rough estimate?

If someone doesn't like naughty swear words they can always watch Roy Rogers reruns.

        • I am going to have a rare moment of agreement with Pacman here. Perhaps the Big Lebowski just doesn't translate well to non-USA viewers. I found it watchable but think i was stoned at the time. (It was a long time ago.)

          No I prefer Fargo.

          • You may be correct, in that it does not translate well outside the USA. I would wonder why Fargo seems to though. You and Pacman both like it.

Based on the comments in the Seinfeld thread, it also does not seem to be as popular equally outside the US.

I think there is a good bit of British humor that I don't get as well. However, I did like Monty Python, Faulty Towers and then there was a hilarious unsung John Cleese movie in the 80s called Clockwise, that had me rolling on the floor laughing.

            • How does "30 Rock" translate to British audiences? If they don't find it to be funny it's a real shame.

              • I think the Big L works well everywhere. In the UK ,everyone(bar 1 woman I know)who saw it loves it.It also has a cult following in Germany(and they aint known for their sense of humour )
Jeff Bridges role as the dissolute anti -hero holds it all together, just as his rug hold his living room together. The "dream " sequences are busby berkeley masterpieces, and the soundtrack,as good as the soundtrack for "easy rider" for example.
I have watched it ,more than Ive watched any other film(10 times?)and it actually seems to get better. The scene introducing John Turturro(jesus) in the bowling alley,I could watch over and over, its so visually interesting.
I am a big fan of the coen brothers also,Fargo's a good movie too.

PS-Another great film to watch over and over is "The Commitments"-Have you seen it yet Lefty?

                  RITA, SUE, AND BOB TOO.
Rita Sue and Bob too-great little film.

Anyone outside the UK know of this little beauty?

I just watched "sex & drugs and rock and roll"-a biopic of Ian Dury.I loved it,but then I loved the music Of Ian and the Blockheads.

What about all the great non-hollywood films out there?
                  Any reccomendations?

Lefty has not seen it yet, but based on your recommendation, Lefty wants to see it now.

I agree about Fargo. It's their 2nd best movie after The Big L that I've seen so far.

I still have several to watch.

They did a remake of True Grit with Jeff Bridges playing Rooster Cogburn due for release 12/25/2010.

Josh Brolin plays Tom Chaney, the man who murders Mattie's father.

Matt Damon plays La Boeuf, the Glen Campbell character in the original.

Barry Pepper plays Lucky Ned Pepper, Robert Duvall's role in the original.

Hailee Steinfeld plays Mattie Ross. She is a relative newcomer who the Coens found through an open casting call.

IMO, this movie is already destined for several Oscar nominations.

                        • Also re The Big L, I don't have the soundtrack, but I was disappointed when I saw the songs that were left off. Both CCR songs were left off as well as Tumbling Tumbleweeds. All were a bigger part of the movie IMO than most of the songs listed as being on the soundtrack.

Those poor people.   The first video in the series is of a couple of brothers who are from the Country France whom just happen to be doing a documentry about Rookie American Firefighters and next thing you know these two Frenchman are in the Twin Towers of New York when they Collasped.
This is a real documentry video. Some pretty hairy shit. Pissed me off for days.

                            • TransAmerica is a very enjoyable movie that I liked very much. Could appeal to some here.

A pre-operative male-to-female transsexual takes an unexpected journey when she learns that she fathered a son, now a teenage runaway hustling on the streets of New York.

                              •  Yeah, honestly I can't watch that 9/11 stuff, I get too angry... It's too close to home.

I just watched the old (1947) "Odd Man Out" tonight, really great... much better than I expected! I've been on a bit of a James Mason kick the past week or two, this is the 3rd movie I've seen of his & there's one more waiting in the dvr. I'm convinced he was the Christopher Walken of the 40-60's with his idiosyncratic line readings & constant look of surprise in his face.  "looleetaa" is priceless ....
