  • If you liked Master & Commander & you liked Gladiator, then it is a safe bet you will enjoy Robin Hood.

This is, as mentioned, the first of 3 movies planned on his life story. He is only referred to as Robin Hood once right at the end of the movie.

And the terrific Mark Strong who was the bad guy in Kick Ass plays the French traitor Godfrey. He is excellent in the part.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

    • I just watched The Big Lebowski the other night. For my tastes, this is a great movie. As good as it gets.

I've been on a Coen Brothers kick lately.

        • I will watch anything by the Coens, even their "failures" are more interesting than 99% of the crap out there. For a few years I tried to watch "Blood Simple" annually, I liked it that much.... very recommended if you haven't seen it yet.

          • (Jake_Sully @ May 17 2010,22:33) Best movie from the 80's is Lifeforce. Its a cult classic, once you see it, you'll know why
            "Lifeforce"? Seriously?

Jake, I'm now convinced you're totally just yanking our chains with your recommendations. I saw that piece of celluloid waste in the theaters on first run and thought it was a horrible waste of time. I had loved Texas Chainsaw and Poltergeist so I thought maybe Tobe Hooper really had the goods until I saw this, which then was confirmed when I saw his next piece of crap "Invaders From Mars" or something like that.

Ok, I was about 19 at the time and only dimly remember it now, but I'd be astounded to find it a cultural or cult treasure as you claim.

Anyone else want to echo young master Jake's recommendation?

I would be the first to raise my hand in support of "Breaker Morant" though. That and "Gallipoli" were two of the finer war-related films of the era.

I'm SUPER excited about going to see "Inception" at the Imax next Friday. It's the new project written and directed by the genius behind "The Dark Knight", and was shot in 65mm. I believe this will be the first true large-format theatrical film since Ron Howard's failed attempt to revive 70mm filming with "Far And Away". If I'm not mistaken, that was the first theatrical film shot entirely in 65/70mm since "Ryan's Daughter" in the late 60's. Plenty of 35mm productions have been blown up for 70mm presentation ("Blade Runner", "Star Wars", etc.) but since these weren't shot native in 70mm they lacked the resolution of the larger format process.

I understand the soundtrack is again by Hans Zimmer, who's score for "The Dark Knight" was half the fun of that blockbuster IMHO.

While on the subject of "The Dark Knight" and large-format cinematography, I'm sure everyone remembers that some of the key scenes in "The Dark Knight" were shot using Imax cameras and film.

Anyway, I'm going to see "Despicable Me" tomorrow, and "Inception" on day of release next Friday.

Totally agree. Anyone who recognizes the genius of Joel and Ethan Coen is all right by me.

              • If there were a "desert island discs" for movies ,I would take the Big Lebowski as maybe my number 1 film.It has everything for me,great characters, great script-visually stunning and a great soundtrack also.It even improves the more you see it.
It is such a cult film now, there are even "lebowski" reunions every year in various US cities, and Ive even visited a Big Lebowski Bar in Dresden,Germany-their speciality drink?-the white russian of course.

                      • Bumpa hated The Big Lebowski??? Wow, that doesn't speak well for Bumpa.

He is the only person I ever heard of who hated the movie.

                        • How could someone hate a movie that only says the word "fuck" 400+ times. I mean just look at pulp fiction or the departed.

Maybe I sound insensitive but its not the case at all. I do care!  But if I had to live my whole life based on how everyone might be sensitive to me.. I would not be living my life as I want it. So you can accept me and my flaws as I am or you can't.

                          • I must have missed something. I did try to watch The Big Lebowski on TV but the combination of an unappealing lead character, the slovenly Jeff Bridges, plus those weird dream sequences, & I found the whole thing irritating.

Not that I have conventional tastes, some of the movies I mentioned on this thread, I went to pains to not recommend them.

All is not lost though, I have since become a big fan of the Coen brothers. But I still get to decide which I like & which I don't. e.g. Fargo - excellent, No Country for Old Men - good thriller with a subplot that was indecipherable.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

(anthony70 @ Mar. 05 2010,16:01) THE HURT LOCKER is out now on torrentz.

                              best film since INGLORIOUS BASTERDS.
Anthony, The Hurt Locker was made in 2008 and released early this year and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS in 2009 so if you're going to do a best since comparison it's better to go for a longer time frame.

                              I.E Avatar (2009) best film since 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Sorry but original version of inglorious basterds was made in 1978, and it is different to the new version, and it's worth watching

                              • The 1978 movie was titled The Inglorious Bastards, slightly different title with the words spelled correctly.

QT's movie, Inglourious Basterds was not a version of the other movie, other than the nearly identical titles IMO. Can you show me where QT is quoted as saying that the other movie inspired him to make his movie?
