Warm beer - what a subject.
The Brits love their draught beer (not lager) at room temperature. The idea of puttin Ice in your beer would horify the majority of bar leaners in the UK.
In Thailand getting a beer at the right temperature is nearly impossible as a constant. Many of the older fridges manage to freeze the beer - broken thermostat/defective door seals.
The new fridges, with wire rack shelving, and a very impressive temperature guage seem to stop beer getting too cold. Having fiddled with the setting at La Bamba since the new fridge arrived back in April - I have been unable to get it to serve consistent very cold beer.
The other problem seems to be that the fridges are really too small so fresh deliveries are not in the fridge for at least 2 full days before serving.
In my village we have given up and have a bucket of ice with our 2 large Leo beers.
Complaining does no good - Thais do not like people complaining and it is seen as rude here.
I did chuckle at Titian's experience about the pen. To ask for it back would be to accuse the waiter, openly, of being a thief. Big 'no no' and loss of face etc and Om did the right thing from a Thai perspective. It seems any confrontation, or enquiring question, is a big 'no no'
I have twice caught a thief and even with their proverbial 'hand in the cookie jar' will deny it. The trick seems to be to go around it a very long way and see if any admission will emerge. Not likely but did happen once - "yes I did take money because my sister need medicine". It took 2 days to get an answer and then I felt guilty about a dying child.
Perhaps to ask, in a round about way, very politely - "what a lovely pen - where may I buy one the same - perhaps I could buy this one from you" would yield some information.
Get used to Thailand it will never get used to you.......
I asked my Thai tutor recently about a dinner I attended - the Kong man in the village - the village head man.
He held a party for 800 guests and our group of foreigners really enjoyed it. The food started at 7.30pm promptly and all 9 courses were served simutaneously and hot. 9 is an auspicious number and it was his 79th Birthday. Great night with wine/beer/whisky on tap.
We were all expected to make an anonymous donation (via an envelope). Another Thai custom to save face.
Food finished at 9.00pm - all the guests left without thanking their host. Amazing, and in the West, certainly seen as discourteous if not damned right rude.
NOT in Thailand - to say farewell would have resulted in a conversation for the guest to explain their hurried/premature departure. So, to save face, just get up and go.

(pacman @ Sep. 13 2010,15:56) I saw two ME chaps last night walking along Beach Rd with a couple of fatties, one of whom was so grotesque that I wondered where on earth he found her.
But it is curious that ME and Indians tend to like their women fat. Which is good news for me 'cos I don't.

Natty is very nice Paccers. Sounds like you had a good night.
With regard to the fever I can give you and everybody else a bit of advice.
Spend a few hours on the drip.....Last trip I had the fever and went to Walking St Clinic which is situated in Soi 14 just before it veers left (at the juncture of Soi 15). I have always used it. I got there at 1 p.m. and my temp. was 103 degrees in the "old" and I was dying.
3 hours on the drip (glucose, vitamins and something else) plus a shot of penicillan in the butt and I was a new man. Actually was out on the town at 8 p.m.
Forget the pills and such they take too long to work.
Don't be a drip.....Go for the DRIP.Best 2980 Bht I have ever spent.
Cheers DKhappy when in thailand

Actually some new medical evidence suggests that fevers are best left alone and just sweat it out. Ill give you the link below Paccers to New Scientist Website as they been debating this recently and the thinking has changed somewhat.

Also its about the individual's income bracket. Of course someone who thinks in terms of their own native currency instead of Dollars will want something cheaper than us and more likely to be living a hotel room shared by 6. I mean come on, we've heard the stories by now.. 300 baht short time? I guess what you're seeing is what 300 baht can net.
I personally like tall and lanky (like my avatar) so I guess my sexual preference is a bit different from some of you lb lovers. For example I'd approach Faa but I wouldn't go near Ging.
Maybe I sound insensitive but its not the case at all. I do care! But if I had to live my whole life based on how everyone might be sensitive to me.. I would not be living my life as I want it. So you can accept me and my flaws as I am or you can't.

(titian @ Sep. 15 2010,13:40) I thought only the Irish stooped so low!
Actually brother Rossco is correct and he is has some experience in the art of imbibing
Lager should be served ice cold , but beer ie bitter , ale etc like a good red wine should be served at room temperature .
Guinness draught = ice cold
Guinness from the bottle = room temp .
People have been lynched in Ireland for lessFree your mind and your ass will follow .

Complaining in restaurants is a real skill and they should teach it rather than Media Studies.
When I was a student I had a dish washing job in a fairly upmarket restaurant in Islington. One evening a guy complained about the tartare sauce served with his fish. A new portion was served up with an addition as - to raucous applause - the commis chef had a wank into the bowl and stirred it all together - the moral being if you complain keep your food in sight! You, you and you hold fire - everyone else come with me - attributed to US Marine Recruiting Sargent WW2.
You, you and you cum on me - everyone else hold fire - attributed to Porn Actor/Director Alexandra in 1992

A good old PB&J sammich sounds so much more appetizing now than eating in a restaurant with a moody chef.
