  • Blast at U.S. embassy called 'terrorism' By NICHOLAS PAPHITIS, Associated Press Writer
    2 hours, 26 minutes ago

The U.S. Embassy in Athens came under fire early Friday from a rocket that exploded inside the modern glass-front building but caused no casualties in an attack police suspect was the work of Greek leftists.

Narrowly missing the embassy emblem, the anti-tank shell pierced the building near the front entrance shortly before 6 a.m., damaging a bathroom on the third room, which houses the ambassador's office, and shattering windows in nearby buildings.

"We're treating it as a very serious attack," U.S. Ambassador Charles Ries said.

Greece's Public Order Minister said police were examining the authenticity of anonymous phone calls to a private security company claiming responsibility on behalf of Revolutionary Struggle, a militant left-wing group.

"It is very likely that this is the work of a domestic group," Minister Vyron Polydoras said. "We believe this effort to revive terrorism is deplorable and will not succeed."

Revolutionary Struggle claimed responsibility for a May 2006 bomb attack on Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis, in which nobody was injured.

U.S.-owned banks and companies have often been targeted in small bomb attacks by groups in Greece. But Friday's incident was the most serious since the 2002 break-up of the far-left November 17 group, which was blamed for several attacks against foreign diplomats and military personnel, including the assassination of a CIA station chief in Athens.

Polydoras said Greece "strongly condemns" the attack.

"We believe it is a symbolic act," he said. "It is an attempt to disrupt our country's international relations."

Police cordoned off streets around the heavily guarded building after the explosion, stopping traffic in much of central Athens for more than three hours. Emergency services scrambled to the embassy building, which is a frequent destination for protest groups.

Investigators were examining what they believed was the device used to fire the rocket shell from a construction site near the embassy.

"This is an act of terrorism," Police Chief Asimakis Golfis said. "There was a shell that exploded in the toilets of the building ... It was fired from street level."

Ambassador Ries said the building was not occupied at the time and the damage was minimal. The embassy is now a crime scene and will remain closed until further notice, he said.

"There can be no justification for such a senseless act of violence," said Ries, who added that there had been no warning.

Authorities were searching nearby apartment buildings and a nearby hospital for evidence.

Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis visited the embassy after the blast.

"I came here to express the solidarity of the Greek people following this deplorable action," she said.

"Such actions in the past have had a very heavy cost for the country. ... The Greek government is determined to undertake every effort to not allow such phenomena to be repeated in the future."

Giorgos Yiannoulis runs a kiosk near the embassy. "I heard a loud bang; I didn't realize what was going on," he said.

It was the most serious attack on the mission since 1996, when November 17 carried out a rocket attack against the embassy that caused minor damage and no injuries.

Polydoras said police would set up a special task force, headed by a former counterterrorism chief who eradicated the November 17 group in 2002. The group was blamed for killing 23 people €” including U.S., British and Turkish officials €” and dozens of bomb attacks.

Several obscure militant groups have appeared since the November 17 members were arrested. Radical groups Revolutionary Struggle and Popular Revolutionary Action have been blamed for the bombings of three government ministries in 2005.

In 2003, a special court gave multiple life sentences to November 17's

This will continue the chilling effect on tourism to Thailand.

              • BANGKOK, Thailand - A bomb exploded near a telephone booth in downtown Bangkok on Saturday, wounding one person, Thai police said. The bomb was planted in a side street of the bustling Thai capital, police spokesman Ronnarong Yangyaen said. The iTV television channel said the slightly wounded person was a 22-year-old man.

Police and bomb squads rushed to the scene to investigate the attack and authorities sealed off the area to vehicles and public. "We cannot speculate about the culprit (behind the attack) for the time being," Bangkok's police superintendent Lt. Gen. Adisorn Nontree told reporters.
Not much on the wires yet, but it doesn't look too serious.

                  • Here's a Reuters report;
BANGKOK, May 5 (Reuters) - A small bomb exploded near a royal palace in the Thai capital Bangkok on Saturday, lightly wounding one person as the country celebrated the anniversary of the coronation of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The bomb shattered a telephone booth outside the Chitrlada Palace, the Bangkok residence of Thailand's revered king who has been on the throne for 60 years, the world's longest reigning monarch.

It was not known if King Bhumibol, who turns 80 this year, was in the palace.

"It was intended to make a loud noise and cause chaos. It was not aimed to destroy life," Police Lieutenant General Adisorn Nonsi told TiTV television.

A young man in his 20s was slightly wounded and being questioned by police, TiTV said.

Thai authorities have not found the culprits behind a series of New Year's Eve bombs in Bangkok that killed three people and wounded 38.

In the immediate aftermath of those blasts, the military suggested that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup last September, or his loyalists were behind the bombs. Thaksin denied any links to the blasts.

Investigators later suggested Muslim militants waging a three-year separatist insurgency in the deep south may have had a role in the Bangkok attacks.

A few things strike me as very odd about the recent bombings.

The ones around New Year were obviously designed to make a statment and get press coverage.  So why no claims released to the press?  Have the police imposed a blackout.
For some reason I doubt it.

If it was Muslim terrorists their usual method is to try to cause as many casualties as possible.  The bombs in London and Madrid were set off on public transport for this very reason.
A telepnone booth is not an ideal way to do this  -  even in a crowded place.

I doubt Taksin supporters  -  as far as I see it any bombings would alienate people from Taksin not help him.

This leaves me with one possibility which fits all the facts.  It's some loner who wants to make his mark.

Most things fit.  The bombs are small and easily planted.
They are not placed to maximise casualties. There are no press releases to capitalize on the media coverage  -  these people are usually intensely shy and avoid contact with others.

These people are hard to catch unless the security services are well practiced and have access to advanced technology.

Fortunately they rarely cause large numbers of casualties.

                      • Interesting theory RR. The bombs at New Year's actually did cause death and injury, but not to the same scale as seen in other Islamic extremist bombings.

The last couple of bombings are small scale though, one in April and now this one just blew up telephone booths - causing slight injury to passers by.

Despite the fact the recent bombs have not caused a lot of injury/death - the effect on tourism is still significant. Numbers are down - and probably not only because of the bombings, but the surprising strength of the Thai Baht, and the seeming inability of the current government to come up with any solutions.

I am not so sure it is a lone bomber, but not being a subscriber to a conspiracy theory, I would not be surprised if the motivation is to discredit the current government. Whether this is a lone person doing it or a group, I am not sure.

                        • Hello Rxpharm,

You are right it's very much a theory.  Forget the conspiracy bit though  -  I'm a died in the wool sceptic of conspiracies

I do wonder if there is no connection between the New Year bombings and the more recent ones.  In other words it's two different individuals/groups responsible.

I suspect that the bombers intention is to discredit authority  -  not particularly the government but any authority.
That is the way of these sort of people  -  they have to show how clever they are.
This would tie up with the lack of casualties and the failure to give a political statement for the media.  The media is usually beneath contempt for these sort of people.

What does really worry me is that there are western governments with the knowledge and resoures to catch these sort of loonies  -    but the Thais are a proud people and may not want to be seen to lose face by asking for help.

Maybe the bombs have been planted by a desprate expat trying to weaken the value of the thai baht so he can get more bang for his buck in nana??? maybe its whitestalion/newbie2007

                              • Road Runner, you have a good point. If they wanted to they could easily build a much stronger bomb with information on the Internet. If they were from the insurgency in the South they could target other areas where inappropraite behavior occured like Pattaya. More than likely this is local criminal activity picked up by foreign newswires.
