  • People Power Party Wins Election

Ousted PM congratulates Samak on win

    Bangkok Post, 24th December 2008.
Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has congratulated Samak Sundaravej, who took the People Power party (PPP) to victory at the election. Mr Samak told a press conference last night that he had talked to Mr Thaksin on the telephone. ''We didn't talk about anything. He only called to congratulate me,'' he said.

Mr Thaksin is in Hong Kong to watch the election results, in which the party he backed beat its nearest rival the Democrats.

PPP member Pol Capt Chalerm Yubamrung told a rally on Friday that Mr Thaksin should come home on Feb 14, Valentine's Day.

Mr Samak told CNN yesterday that even if he did come back then, the former prime minister still had to face corruption charges filed by the Asset Scrutiny Committee.

''He must stay away from politics for a while,'' he said.

The PPP leader said that if he had the chance, he would grant a political amnesty to 111 executive members of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai party, who were banned from political activity for five years.

Mr Thaksin's website, www.hi-thaksin.net, welcomed the PPP's victory, saying that it was a victory for the people.

''Congratulations on a victory for the people,'' it said.

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said he would remain in the job until an elected government was in place.

No new policy would be initiated by his government during the transition period and his job was to ensure stability during preparations for the transfer of administrative power.

Mr Samak said last night he would be ready to serve as the next prime minister, and invited other parties to join him in forming a coalition government

Rubbing the nose of the royalists and the military in Thaksin€™s continuing popularity with this kind of election outcome is, it seems to me, Thailand€™s best hope for the future.

Perhaps General Prem will keep his conviction of his own entitlement to rule the great unwashed under control this time around and nothing will happen, but my money€™s on the opposite outcome. Whether they roll out their tanks again or use less ham-handed tactics this time around, Prem and the monarchists will one way or another lead the palace into yet another quixotic assault on the whole concept of freely elected civil government in Thailand. This time, however, there will be no girls with flowers to greet them as heros, and this time Prem€™s pompous, overweening sense of his own importance will end in conflict sufficient to finish off the monarchy as a viable political power base once and for all.

    Praise the Lord.......

It will be interesting to see how how many MP's get the red card for bribery - still rife apparently in the North East, however when you actually look at the total number of votes they receive up their - makes you wonder why they bother when they receive like 80% of the vote - surely they are NOT all bought votes and would probably win without even needing to hand out some donations.

Certainly going to be an interesting couple of days as the political games go on. It sounds like there is no good solution to allow for a face saving remedy.

          Cheers

does anyone expect the next coup (or the one after that) to involve violence? anything beyond marching in the street? will the tanks still stop at intersections to wait for green traffic signal? any direct effect on ladyboy-loving whoremongers who stay in hotels in tourist areas and support the economy of thailand no matter who's "in charge"?

They would then be the only ones in Thailand to do that
Jokes aside..there could be some bodybags around if things get nasty. Let's hope the King to stay well too. That would likely mitigate the effect.
