Ousted PM congratulates Samak on win

Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has congratulated Samak Sundaravej, who took the People Power party (PPP) to victory at the election. Mr Samak told a press conference last night that he had talked to Mr Thaksin on the telephone. ''We didn't talk about anything. He only called to congratulate me,'' he said.
Mr Thaksin is in Hong Kong to watch the election results, in which the party he backed beat its nearest rival the Democrats.
PPP member Pol Capt Chalerm Yubamrung told a rally on Friday that Mr Thaksin should come home on Feb 14, Valentine's Day.
Mr Samak told CNN yesterday that even if he did come back then, the former prime minister still had to face corruption charges filed by the Asset Scrutiny Committee.
''He must stay away from politics for a while,'' he said.
The PPP leader said that if he had the chance, he would grant a political amnesty to 111 executive members of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai party, who were banned from political activity for five years.
Mr Thaksin's website, www.hi-thaksin.net, welcomed the PPP's victory, saying that it was a victory for the people.
''Congratulations on a victory for the people,'' it said.
Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said he would remain in the job until an elected government was in place.
No new policy would be initiated by his government during the transition period and his job was to ensure stability during preparations for the transfer of administrative power.
Mr Samak said last night he would be ready to serve as the next prime minister, and invited other parties to join him in forming a coalition government
