    Criteria:
    - seaside
    - near a bigger city
    - not far from Bangkok

I'd go for Hua Hin or Cha Am..

As I have Kids, I will be forced to go where the schools are located (Pattaya, Bangkok).

Hua Hin. Very very liveable and the Thais want to keep it that way.

Happy with my oasis in Pattaya - 10km from the action if I want it and just five minutes from a stunning golf course with dozens more near by. Bangkok just over an hour up the road and the islands can be hopped to in an hour or so. I am happy with the flexibility, the cost of living and the luxury I can afford here.

Still keep places in the UK and Dubai but might opt for an apartment in Phuket, Hua Hin or Samui for a getaway every now and again. I agree the island seclusion might get to me after a while so I'll stick to what I have... and with work travels taking me to Europe and Brazil, it's great to get around and appreciate what the world has to offer. Pentire's post pretty much sums it up.

(Stewart @ Jul. 28 2010,12:04) Bangkok without a doubt. And it very affordable to jump in a taxi or on a plane to anywhere else in Thailand for a few days to get out of the city
not sure, Stew......I tried BKK for 4 years, drove me nuts......traffic, smog, loud noises, etc.....of course there is more entertainment, movie theatres, malls, places with A/C!!!!!, etc..... but the island living I've been doing the past 4 have been much better in so many ways.

Bored senseless? Sometimes, yes.....but then there are always the empty beaches to go to, or a ride on the scooter on open roads with no people on them, meeting cool Euro-people who pass through, good food, solitude when I want it, no noise......truth be told I am torn, I like both and for sure BKK would be a 2nd option. Nowhere else on the list really floats my boat as far as living there, only Phuket and Bangkok would cut it. With that said I have never been to Hua Hin, I guess I owe it to myself to check it out before I decide to settle down.

Well, as you have always told me it may be a bit too "quiet'' for my tastes!  But I am closing in on the 1/2 century mark in a few years and "quiet" may be exactly what I will be looking for at that time.   Maybe this winter killa, I will let you know.

Can I change my vote from Pattya to Bangkok onnut now?

I've suddenly become very interested in that part of the world.
