I'm with you EL_hefe! I feel the same way. I am looking at winter's in LOS and summer's back home. I do not want to be anywhere for long periods of time. Drives me crazy. I enjoy moving back and forth. I always liked the idea of "going" some where and usually disliked "being" there. If that makes any sense.

Just the opposite, man.....I have been doing that since 2002 now, with 5 or 6 months in Thailand and the other months not all that far from you; it's getting really old and now that my kids are self-sufficient [well, except for college bills ugghhhhhh] I want one HOME, a place I can stay in all year round. and it won't be north america because it's too damned expensive.....same as Europe; and frankly I can't handle the cold weather so both places are out. Kinda by default and because it's the cheapest and most fun of the 20 countries I have been to, Thailand seems the logical place now to have just one full-time, year round home and ditch all the bills from living around here.

But agreed that island living *may* get old after a year or 3 ......... BKK would be 2nd choice for me for the same reasons TT mentioned, but it has no beach which is rough ..... decisions, decisions!!

              Jai Dee,

              Interesting.

Living in BKK means you are one hour from some beach some where. Two hours and an 1100B cab ride to Pattaya and Jomtien. $49.00 to fly to Samui or Phuket or Chiang Mai. If you have a motorbike or car you can elect at any time to get out of where you are and go where ever you want to within Thailand. Can't beat that!

We are all different and my particular pre-disposition to travel is not based on inexperience. I truly do not like being anchored any where. Never did. I like the dual existence and dual base. I always have. Especially now as I consider living in the other hemisphere within a culture which, in many ways is the total opposite and contrary to mine.

Suffice to say it is my "balance" for the time being. Perhaps that will change in the future like many other things have in the past. :-)

              Nice to have you back.

              Steff

From mid October thru to May in Pattaya with 4 or 5 day breaks on Samui and Phuket, the odd weekend in Bangers......the rest of the year in the UK with plenty of weekend city breaks on mainland Europe.

(El_hefe @ Jul. 27 2010,19:22) If $$$ was no concern, I'd buy a quiet villa somewhere in a nice area of Bangkok, I'm assuming they're there.

(JaiDee @ Jul. 27 2010,10:01) so far no Pattaya choices, which is rather surprising
i think once you read the 'money is no object' part, then why settle for a place whose main attraction is its cost value.

i'm not above enjoying pattaya -- i hope to be enjoying the hell out of it next month. but if samui or phuket were just as easy on the wallet and i needn't think twice about flying in whoever i wanted whenever i wanted, then i i'd prefer to combine pattaya's party options with a much better beach. meantime, i had to go with 'other' because i couldn't pick just one.

jaidee, you planning on buying? is that why you have to be so certain about your choice before making the move? i'm leaning -- and this is in the ever-more-immediate future -- to leasing/renting a place for a year. and if i don't like it, just move along. the last thing i want in thailand is buyer's remorse. and when i cost-average annual leasing, it'd take more years than i have left before i spend as much on rent money as i would buying the kind of place i'd like to live.

so my vote goes for the combination of a settled life in paradise (with ocean-view) with the option to get the hell out of town.

I will never buy ...... the very last thing I would ever want is to be tied down to one spot in ANY country, let alone Thailand. And my interests change often, usually about every 5 years I find new things to excite me; in 3-5 years who knows what I will be doing? My interests at that time may take me far from Thailand and Asia, so there's no way I would ever buy anything there; and the one home I bought in the states is now sold and there's also no way I will buy here ever again, it's a boring and overpriced place to live. I lease/rent for long stretches in Thailand as well and it works pretty well, I could never even imagine buying and being stuck with one home/city 'forever'.

Sex really doesn't play into this equation at all, either; I will live somewhere that I like and enjoy for a multitude of reasons, not just because cheap sex is available there. Which is why Pattaya would be about the LAST place I would ever choose to live, I think that place exists only for sex and that's not a big deal to me.

Time will tell.....but I will definitely live in a place where I can live well for 2000-2500US per month and that pretty much has to be the 3rd world.

Samui is defenitely on the agenda for myself and you know who  ( )   in the future
Any time Dave, I'll prepare the honeymoon suite for u ha ha

Samui works for me for a number of reasons but the main one is my mountain biking. Theres so many undeveloped off road areas ( still ) here and challenging hills and any number of trails available to keep me going for years.

The location here is great because Krabi and Phuket are a few hours drive away or 50 minute flight depending on the budget if I need a change of terrain or LB. Getting to Pattaya is easy too as its 45 mins to U- tapao but unfortunatley 7500 baht return

Ive found samui very easy on the wallet so far as I cook most of the time and dont drink hardly now, also the small island feeling was a worry at first but has never been an issue so it really depends on your life style and want you want to do all day.

                            So far so good

The poll question was "where would you live in Thailand"

Anyone with half a brain would get bored senseless living on a small island. And the idea of living in a holiday resort with a different set or lager louts as neighbours every week does not appeal much.

Bangkok without a doubt. And it very affordable to jump in a taxi or on a plane to anywhere else in Thailand for a few days to get out of the city

I've been all around Thailand now (even Isaan) and whilst I loved the islands in the south, and Bangkok has everything one could ever dream or need, I voted for Chiang Mai.

To me Chiang Mai was the most "livable" city I visited. It has all the amenities one would ever need plus it's a one hour plane ride from BKK.
