    And of course this:

Lee continued the colonial legacy of using English as the language of the workplace and as the common language among the different races, while recognising Malay, Mandarin Chinese, and Tamil as the other three official languages. All state schools now use English as the medium of instruction.
Lee had Nanyang University absorbed by the English-language University of Singapore; the combined institution was renamed the National University of Singapore. This move greatly affected the Chinese-speaking lecturers and professors, who would now have to teach in English. It was opposed by some Chinese groups. These protests went unheeded, and the English-language policy prevailed; it is nowadays cited as a key element in Singapore's economic success.

Thaksin never had a vision for Thailand other than making himself and his family rich. If Thailand benefited as a by product so be it. His populist measures to help the poor were calculated to keep him in power, because he knew there were more votes in the countryside than in the urban areas.

Lee Kwan Yew was visionary and Singapore is what it is today because of him.

It's getting ugly out there. Looks like we may need Ronnie McD to mediate.

          from THE NATION:

2 Red-Shirted Protesters Injured in Pattaya Clash

Pattaya - Two red-shirted protesters were injured during their battle with the blue-shirted demonstrators in front of the Royal Cliff Beach Resort Hotel Saturday morning.

At 9:34 am, the two sides sent representatives to negotiate and agreed to keep a distance between the two groups of demonstrators to avoid more clashes.

(Stogie @ Apr. 10 2009,12:24) If Thaksin came back and formed a new government (unlikely) then Thailand would see the fastest economic recovery and growth of the whole of Asia.

His strong arm tactics and popularity are what is missing in the world especially in Asia.
Ok... take Singapore. They had lots of growth.

Now, take away Thai, Viet, Philippina and PRC girls from OT, Geylang and Desker/Rowell areas.
                        What fun remains?

I know many of you are Star Trek fans.
But... where do federation citizens get their P4P fun ??
                        I don't get this?

Take away Nana, Cowboy, Patpong, Bangla and Pattaya....and what fun remains in Thailand?

Singapore has P4P fun for every budget, GG and LB.

Or how about a 40 min ferry over to NED...Nagoya Entertainment District...in Batam. And if you think Nana is run down.......

The ferries are full on Friday nights of Sillyporeans heading over for a cheap weekend of P4P fun

After watching the news and seeing what was happening just down the road I had a hard time deciding what colour shirt to wear.

I opted for a black one....

I know... but why do you want to turn Thailand in another Singapore?

If Thailand experiences lots of growth, social "justice", redistribution of wealth, gets a non-corrupt police, etc.

This can only be financed via an all-engulfing tax system, healthcare (i.e. healthtax) system, state welfare, etc.

now, what they get in their pocket, is what they can spend (except the salary people who must pay income tax).

Later, if all the "improvements" are made, the government will be always broke, like in western countries today, and the Thais will have to pay tax if they own land (property tax), if they own a building (property tax), for inheritance, the VAT will raise, etc. etc. etc.

Living costs will raise dramatically, and there will be much less "individual entrepreneurs" than today, more people will have a regular job, live in an apartment, pay taxes, etc.....

Western-style growth is turning people into modern slaves. Of course they have better health, the illusion to influence politics, improved safety, etc.
But they will have to give away/back about 80 to 90% of their income for taxes, health insurances, rent, etc.
Not to mention 90% of their time too.
And then witness the government regulate all aspects of life (totalitarism) and take away civil liberties one by one for the sake of safety (like what happens now in Europe).

Plus the above system is proven to concentrate money at the top.
But this "top" is different from Thailand's "top".

The modern economics "top" is not composed of old money, aristocracy or inventors.
The new "top" is composed of weasel managers which aren't particularly good at anything but who are excellent public relations types with a huge network. Those people appoint each other in key position and then seize every opportunity to make the money flow their way.

                              Thank you, but no thanks.

I fully subscribe to the King's "sustainable growth" concept, or whatever he called it.
