    Stewart:

...rule of law => Okay to that

...business transparency => I am not sure this helps. Business transparency will help foreigners to get rich in Thailand, yes. Will it help the Thai?

...streets that don't smell of sewers => Detail

...half decent education system => again, does Thailand need this? Do you want your 7-11 staff to have bachelor degrees like over here in Europe? Many people are as educated as they can be, yet unhappy.

...taxis that always put their meters on => I don't see how that helps. Are you afraid of a little negociation here and there? Are you too timid to negociate? Fact is, that many westerners became so "softened" that they don't dare to negociate a price anymore. I think liberty to set prices freely is a good thing, even if it means that sometimes one overpays. Hell, in Europe, taxi drivers dictate ridiculous prices and there is nothing one can do against it!!

...honest police force => this means paying high salaries to police and everybody else too.

    ...a multi-cultural society that works => I think the Thai's don't want a "multi-cultural society". they want a Thai society.

....and gg's and lb's from every asian country last night in Orchard Towers --> except from Singapore, right? kinda proves my point.

Wrong. The Singaporean ladyboys hang out in the corridors inside OT, outside on Orchard Road, and a few of them in Crazy Horse

(manarak @ Apr. 12 2009,20:12) Gunfire, tanks and state of emergency in Bangkok, shit!!!

On the other hand, we can expect police and army to support the government.
Why would you think that ?

since the current government has been put in place with the army's support...

I watched today the movie "bangkok robbery" and the scenario had me think.

yep, that's what I wanted to say.
I expect the army and police to act in a coordinated manner with the government, since higher up, both are controlled by the same people.

The Army did NOTHING in Pattaya, that was an easy to control situation and they just smiled and let the demonstrators in.
Its not a sure thing that the Army will follow the government's orders. Nobody knows whats really going on, certainly not us lowly (but sane) Farang.

I'm wondering if they are not just waiting that the red commit some really bad crimes.
That would give them a good reason to step in firmly.

360 years ago a small country off the coast of Europe executed it's king.

The general who ended up in charge for the next 10 years realised what a thoroughly bad idea it is to have the army running the country.

Even today the navy and airforce budget runs continuously  -  the politicians don't have to vote to keep them.

The budget for the army has to be approved by the politicians  every  year.

In this same small country today you can be a politician  -  or you can be a policeman or in the army.
You cannot be a politician and be a government employee at the same time.

This is as it should be.

This country is  NOT  called  Thailand.

There are several other counties in this world that would do well to read and note this lesson.  Not excluding Thailand.
