(dummy_plug @ Jun. 23 2008,08:23) So Kahuna, how did you deal with this? I mean, I assume you've probably been in a few situations where you've been at the head of the table surrounded by several of your tee rak's "cousins", "friends", and "others". Do you pretty much just grin and pay up at the end?
And if you get the inkling this is going to happen, how do you avoid such pitfalls?

And eating at a high-end restaurant, would be like going to something like an all-you-can-eat MK for 99 baht a head...A bottle of whiskey costs 45 baht...A 5 or 6 lb pork loin at the market is less than 100 baht...cigarette lighters are 3 for 10 baht...A large plastic bag of pappaya (which they eat at least twice daily) or noodles and pork is 15 baht...and the rice pots, both steamed and sticky, are always full...No McDonalds, No Kentucky Fried...No western food available...
These are poor poor Isaan folks and I was the rich farang...I was expected to pay...And I knew that going in...
And when it became too much, which grew in frequency as time went on, I just walked about 100 yards out to the main road and caught a 300 baht bus ride back to Bangkok...
