First, I always thought that one of the basic tenets of any business was to listen to its customers...Good or bad, there is something to be learned from a customer complaint...

I am a long time patron, customer, visitor, whatever of Guess Bar...and one of its major advocates...BUT, originally the bar was a sort of safe haven of sorts...the unwritten rule was that you could venture into Guess and sit at the bar and not be approached by a girl for any reason...order your drink and just stare at their asses for hours on end if that is your bent...

And it was indeed that way...

In the new bar things are much different...and that's not to say it's either good or bad...just different...

I visit the bar almost every night when I'm in BKK...and I fully realize that my experience is not the same as an infrequent visitor to the bar...But I do observe what is happening and what the OP is complaining about...and in truth, now in many ways it's not much different than a visit to a bar in NEP...The girls are all ready to pounce on the customer the minute he reaches for the door...

Things change...everything is dynamic...sometimes we like the change....sometimes we don't...

The OP doesn't...that doesn't make it right or wrong...He simply doesn't like the change...Don't be so harsh...

Vivian, I just want to say that I enjoyed the old Guess bar and I am looking forward to seeing the new bar when I visit next month (August). I had a great time out on the town with Jenny, Fern and Natty.

I never did get the chance to meet you Viv, but hopefully will do so in August.

i had always been a stalwart fan of cascade and cascade girls, and then a short time after guess moved to the raja complex i spent most of my time there. at first i was put off (previous posts of mine) by the music issue that got so much coverage here, but then they got that sorted to the point where they now have some of the better tunes for a bkk girlie bar.

however (here come the rants) ...

1st rant: lately i have been keeping away, id say for about 2 months now. i still actually go to check out the scene, but most nights i am turned off by a couple of aspects that i just choose to not deal with. i know there are alternatives.

i live here, and i am someone that most posters of this forum would say is way to generous with the girls to the point of upsetting the rules of nature. but that is my choice and i am not complaining abut that at all. i choose who i wish to be generous with and who not. if i am generous, and then feel that it is not being appreciated, i simply stop with that person and move on. yes, i am called a jow-chu by the girls i cut off, but i know that is simply a knee jerk reaction from girls who have lost my favor and have nothing else to add to the discussion when i explain to them why i have taken them off the "A" list.

but back to my rant.

the main reason i tend to leave now after only one drink is the unbearably sheer level of shrill-ear-splitting-screaming-mee-mee bs. i used to think that the guess girls were a cut above the rest. more mature and more lady-like. that seems to have evaporated along with the economy/clientele. one may have a lot to do with the other.

they do not act like the women they aspire to be (and look like, no complaints for looks), nor the men they should have been before the transition. neither do they behave like young adults, which some punters feel is the true level of their (or any bar girls/Thais) mentality. they behave like children who are suffering from too much sugar and lack of attention.

granted i may be getting older and i may be kicking back more than i used too, but i go their to relax, have a cold drink and talk to a nice girl and then maybe go short time. i find it nearly impossible to relax now because of this inane screeching and howling that is just about non-stop. so i leave after one drink, and zip over to cascade.

now the girls in cascade for the most part are younger, and you would think more immature. but i now feel that they are actually much more ladylike and friendly. they know customers are not arriving in droves any more and despite being a bit aggressive at times, they seem to be a hell of a lot more "refined", professional and easier to be with.

in regard to my generous thing, i used to spend in the neighborhood of 50,000+ baht a month on my personal play and r & r. much of that was spent at guess and on the girls at guess. now i do not and my bank account is actually reflecting this change in a very positive way. so i must believe that for a small bar like guess, their accounts are reflecting the opposite in a very negative way.

2nd rant: i was in the bar 2 weeks ago and when i got there there were no customers at all to speak of at about 10:30. i saw how down trodden the 12 or so girls were so i decided to ring the bell and cheer everyone up. that lasted about 10 minutes and then it was back to business as usual or is it unusual?

3rd rant: hardly anyone shows up anymore for work. sure customers are far-and-in-between, but if you don't go to work everyday, when will you know when they are there? plus, and i have others mention this to me, why bother going if there is not going to be a good choice of girls to hang out with or pay the bar for? most punters at guess actually have jobs and work all day. i for one have limited time to prowl and so i go to places that i consider to be a known quantity, not where it is less than hit-or-miss.

hopefully, like the music issues of last year, someone will try to understand that this is a critique (as self serving as it may be) and it is meant to hopefully get things back to where they were before the economic down turn stuck a knife into the heart of bkk. *

in closing i would like to mention that a few weeks ago there was a thai pop concert at impact arena. it was cheap enough that i was able to purchase 8 tickets, i took 6 girls from cascade and K. Gong the bartender from guess. i could not think of one girl from guess that i would have wanted to spend the evening with, mix with the others, or go out in public among other Thais and who would appreciated the gesture and the fun. previously yes, but not now. where did all the gems go?

BTW: the show rocked for 3 hours straight * *a SRO crowd that did not sit down and danced for the entire time. it was an event, not a concert. afterwords we went for seafood. * *everyone had a memorable experience and everyone was appreciative. all 6 were the ladies they aspire to be. (see pic)

sure it is, and to be called or be a "jow-chu" is and of itself not such a bad thing within this context, but it is a complete denial of the facts and the situation by the person who utters it. which means that nothing is learned, and nothing is gained, and the cycle will be self perpetuating.

i can go on and do as i please and seek my fun and pleasures elsewhere, on the other hand the other person involved has discovered nothing about their behavior or how it might actually affect their ability to support themselves or improve the bar's business which is supposed to be a good thing for all concerned.

Either they misunderstand your generosity for a genuine wish to find your long term ladyboy companion or they want to hold on you as long as possible and when they think about the huge money they'll miss they begin to cry and when they see they've lost they become bad losers.
Many are bad losers.

I think all this jow chu theater is just that: a show.

I have always liked Jenny and on my first visit to the old Guess Bar  she was my favourite and  the only girl I have have taken from the Guess Bar and on a few occasions to boot.

Even though I have took another girl there ( my then g/f ) after I had pre-arranged to meet  Jenny  I saw her right (i.e. Baht)

Last visit to Guess Jenny turned her nose up at me, I was surprised but it didnt bother me. Maybe it was the time of the month

I dont need that or the Guess Bar for that matter, its lost its "Magic" which is due mainly to Jay not being present anymore IMHO and to be honest I wont be in any hurry to return

I was not sure if I was going to bring this up as the Guess bar seems to held in such high esteem by many BMs. But given the turn of this thread, well...

Beside not finding the place very pleasurable or rewarding in general this go round, I had toward the end an experience that left me rather disturbed.

There was only one other punter there and he was so drunk he was mashing his words into porridge. He soon buggered off and left me with a bar full of bored katoeys.

I wandered outside to where some had been eating and was immediately verbally set upon by a very  large and unattractive amazon. Being in a really good mood and only on my second beer I could see absolutely no reason for this. No matter what my efforts to mollify her and calm the situation, she was just on a launch. It became personal. Finally some other calmer LB heads broke it up and sent her inside.

This was NOT a sexy experience and pretty much killed The Guess bar right there and then.

I made the mistake of leaving with whats-her-face, (You all have spoken of her many times, begins with a 'V' I think, the young cute one with the fabulous rack). Problem is, she is also the one who loves her mirror "too much, long time!" This twist turned out to be the second most annoying incident of my trip, (minutes after the first had ended). She would not let the mirror down and conversation was rendered a frustrating task. When it cam time to getting her back to the DIG, she said she could not go, turns out she is 17 and had an ID to corroborate that fact. End of that right there.

Now it dawned on me that the amazon LB had been screaming, amongst other things, about taking her to a short term room, but in a threatening way. Confused was an understatement.

All this drama stopped me from returning for one more go round with my beloved Eats... Sadly,  I think I may not ever go back.
