(Road Runner @ Apr. 13 2008,06:01) I'm looking at getting a new small snapshot camera which is pocketable.

After looking around carefully I have come up with this one:- Canon Ixus 75

Anyone had any experience or got any comments about them?

By the way they are available for about £118-140 in the UK now.

    RR.
    Hi RR,

Here are a few good review sites for digital cameras:

    Digital Camera Resource

    Digital Photography Review

    Imaging Resource

Think about what kind of photos you want to take the most, landscapes, portraits, low light etc. as some cameras do well in certain areas than others. For example some of the Fuji point and shoots do very well in low light conditions.

Take your time and choose the best camera for your needs.

(Looker @ Apr. 18 2008,03:46) I guess you didn't read my previous posting.
      Hello Looker,

Yes I did read your post - it's one of the reasons I posted

I was seriously considering getting an OM-1 or OM-2 which had just come out but in '79 I did not have much money
Luckily I waited and they brought out the OM-2n which I got a couple of years later.

        Hello Rxpharm,

Thanks for the links. I've been through many reviews I was after comments (good or bad) from anyone who had one or similar.

I've done a bit more research and come to the conclusion that the IXUS 850IS will probably be the best bet for what I what and I'm trying to get hold of one.
They are discontinued but still available in the UK for now.

They are both great cameras. I don't use mine so much nowadays and probably one of the years to come I'll have to get a digital...I'm not living in the fast lane

Olympus makes fine cameras - film has a wider latitude for dynamic range capture than digital (for the time being) - you can see shadow and highlight details better in film, while digital generally blows out (over exposes) the highlights or underexposes the shadow detail - kind of like slide film.

There are ways you can recover some of this in post processing or exposure "stacking". Some of the newer sensors such as those in the Nikon D300 and the Sony Alpha 700 have improved on the dynamic range.

Here is another site that describes cleaning of the sensor: Copper Hill Images

Firstly Hey Donnny- didnt know you were into photography. If I had known we could have had some long chats in Stringfellows- or would that have been a distraction.

Your outdoor shots look absolutely great. I dont shoot in raw myself - preferring to try and get it right first time with a jpeg.

To road runner and others. I am a dedicated canon man. Theres arguments all ways round as to what is best and its not a debate I want to get into. What I will say is that I use an Ixus 800 for my daily out and about shots, mainly in bars but sometimes outside. These go on my forum un-photo shopped as is. They are usually taken at night cos thats when vampires and ladyboys wake up. Night time conditions are in my experience the most difficult. What impressed me most about the Ixus is the digic 2 precessor and its ability to genuinely focus in low light conditions. Honestly, I can be in a bar and wave the camera around very fast and press the shutter. Whatever it was randomly pointed at, at that second comes back in clear focus. I find that amazing. But my little Ixus's processor is Digic 2 . Some of the newer models have digic 3 which is truly amazing. If people were thinking of a point and shoot, then I would highly recommend the Ixus - especially with digic 3. The only limitation to these very small cameras is I think- understandably the flash power which seems to have a range of about 10 ft.

If really small size isnt the issue, then, I would recommend people look at the canon G9 point and shoot. This has to be one of the most sophisticated point and shoot cameras available. Its fairly small. has a hot shoe for external flashes which can be controlled by the camera. It can take raw images, it is up to 12 mega pixels and its processor is Digic 3 and can take canon swappable lenses. In Thailand its around Bt 17000 or $550 US- probably much cheaper elsewhere elsewhere.

I used to use canon G series all the time for my professional shoots. Now Ive changed to a canon digital SLR. Currently, I am using a Canon D400. Its been a hard learning curve to come round, changing from point and shoot to SLR. Ive cut my teeth on this camera and am now considering upgrading to the D450 or the 40D. The D450 is new out this month and in Pattaya they want Bt 28000 for it. The 40D is Bt 40,000 but much more robust. I'm going to hang on a bit and see what happens to prices.

Changing from point and shoot to SLR was a bit like going from a 4 wheel drive SUV to a racing car. The first will go anywhere with severe limitations on performance. The later needs setting up carefully for each race track. And the latter is a digital SLR- but once you get to understand the set up requirements its as satisfying as playing on a musical instrument.

                Cheers Somchai.

                  Hello Somchai,

Thanks for that information - that was the sort of thing I was looking for.

Checked up and the IXUS 850IS is Digic 3.
I know from the various reviews that it starts up really quickly and the flash is fairly powerful for a small camera.
They also say that it's really good at focusing in poor light which is also what I'm after.

Thanks Somchai, glad you liked them IT's a wonderful learning experience which i have been in since october 2007 when i bought the D80' prior to this back in the 80,s i had a canon a1 slr, unfortunatly this camera and all my equipment was stolen,so i lost interest for a long while.
