Just purchased this nikkor lens macro 60mmf/2.8 D for $420 aus dollars. great little lens and a very reasonable price

This is still my favourite - I've had it for 25 years and it still easily beats anything else I have ever seen for taking photographs in extreme light conditions.
The main flash for it (T32) is almost crazy and is fully integrated with the metering system.

Over the years I've aquired a collection of assorted Zuiko lenses to go with it.

The downside being that even the basic camera and two lenses is bulky to carry round.

RR  that cam will take pics that most  digitals cant. They are star trails, set the shutter to b bulb in digital and put the camera on tripod.
leave camera in a dark(very dark preferable out in the desert somewhere) setting and come back 5-6 hours later.(depending on the sky) and you will have a wonderful black night sky with star trails.  This type of photo is very difficult to achieve with a digital slr. as they are too sensitive. IT can  be achieved with an cable shutter release which is programable, set at 20 minute exposures continuous .  again there may be problems with batteries, and if you achieve the shots they still have to be super imposed over each other(photo shopped) to get the effect.

The D300 is quite a good option also, a lot cheaper than the D3 and yet still a really good camera.

Some lovely photos in this thread. I've just bought a canon 400d as i would like to start photography, with a couple of lens. You never know one day i might be able to take photos like the ones that have been posted. For the time being i'm still pointing and shooting

ya tell it can be purchased for around $900 us these days, on line in the usa.
Marshal , just get out there and click away, experiment with the settings on your camera, and if you dont like the pics delete them.
Its the best way to learn about your cam and how it works.
recently i bought a sb-800 speed light flash for my d80. i have been snapping away inside the house using command mode etc , bounce flash infill etc, im now fairly competent with the new equipment, but hey i shot 1000 odd shit pics too
