(guydesavoy @ Jun. 06 2010,22:22) You're basically saying that kahuna is a rotten tomato ?
I would say that Kahuna is a very cool tomato

And I would definitely say that 98% of the time if he either liked or hated a movie, or thought it was mediocre, he would certainly be right; HE either liked it or hated it or thought it was mediocre.

      (Lefty @ Jun. 06 2010,22:20) Happy now?
I am ALWAYS happy, I have the best life of anyone I know.

       Except when the bills arrive
I don't think the Pats are going to have much trouble with Buffalo when they come to town. You better worry more about Miami and Jersey B.

That would make it 100 % then for kahuna... and 98 for Lefty...

Any hoo I'd rather be Mr 98% than Mr 10%

You are a wild and crazy guy, just like Steve Martin used to be.

Kahuna may not agree with your tastes in movies 98% of the time.

What I meant was when he recommends a movie, I nearly always like it. If he gives one a thumbs down, I usually gave it the same. That's if both seen it.

(JaiDee @ Jun. 06 2010,08:15) Rotten Tomatoes is a good website to get a good feel for movies, because they will get the reviews of anywhere from 20 to 100 film critics and give a percentage or who thought it was good or bad, etc.... many times I have debated seeing a movie and then gone to that site and seen that only 35% of the people polled liked it, read a few reviews and skipped that movie; saving a few bucks and 2 or 3 hours of my life.  Converesly, a movie like Inglourious Basterds got about a 95% rating up there so you'd have to almost believe that hands down.

Any movie that can get, say, a 75% or above agreements from people  saying it was good, and they do movie critiquing for a living, is probably worth seeing IMO.
jaidee is right on recommending rottentomatoes as an excellent money- and time-saving resource. unfortunately, even 95% of the world can be wrong -- which is to say, not in agreement with me. i thought inglorious basterds was slow to start, self-contradictory in style, brad pitt at his worst, and overloaded with pompous symbolism. although i did think that cristoph waltz was brilliant. and even when he fails, tarantino can't help but display a bit of genius.

per comments re lefty's use of kahuna's critiques: finding a reviewer or two with whom you can generally agree can be very useful--and not that hard to do. i suggest going to rottentomatoes and looking at reviews of a half-dozen movies you've already seen and had strong feelings for one way or the other. then find those reviewers who are in agreement with you on all six and use the opinions of those reviewers to help select your next film.

if that doesn't work, blame the bad popcorn or the noisy kid in the seat behind you.

But maybe it will get him to put back the movie poster and get rid of the annoying cowbell dude from BTO??

not sure what exactly Lefty loved about "Basterds", but allow me to quickly recommend a few alternatives:
"Seven Samurai" and "The Dirty Dozen" (for far superior --and very different -- versions of the 'gathering the bad guys to do good' portion of Basterds) and "The Wild Bunch" and "Pulp Fiction" (for a superior cinematic display of bloody violence).

if it's brad pitt that Lefty was digging...go for "Burn After Reading" (if that's not violent enough, "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" didn't suck.)

Kahuna, if you liked any of these, maybe you can help steer Lefty in that direction, at least until i get a chance to buy him a beer.

I thought he did OK in Inglourious......his accent was definitely a little forced, but his role was cool and he played it well.

I think Pitt's perfect role was Oceans 11 and even Oceans 12 [which sucked]; he's a slick dude and those roles were made for him.

Also as Bumpa said somewhere, he did very well in 12 Monkeys as the crazy scientists kid.....great role, great movie

I have seen The Dirty Dozen. GREAT movie! Pulp Fiction same same. I really seriously doubt you'll ever meet anyone who has seen The Wild Bunch more than I have. It's my favorite movie ever. I know it like the back of my hand. I'd not be surprised if I've seen it 100 times.

Seven Samurai, I've not seen that I can recall.

Brad Pitt was fine in Basterds, but he wasn't the reason I loved it. I'm a big QT fan and his style in all his movies, sits well with me. The plots are unique and they are very dialog intensive. Not geared on special effects. I'm not big on special effects to make a movie good. One example I've given before, Avatar probably had a budget over 100 times the budget of In Bruges. But to me, In Bruges was a 100 times better movie. The latter was a kahuna recommend btw.

I doubt kahuna will be wanting to steer me in any direction though. He is mad at me now and doesn't communicate anymore. Maybe he will change in the future, who knows? As I recall, he did like Basterds a lot too anyway.
