  • Obesity in America

CNN is running a special this week about childhood obesity in America and if it can be stopped.   I think it's too late, really;  if you just walk around  the malls in any US  city  you will see that the majority of kids are now either just plain fat or downright obese; whereas 20, 30 years ago the fatter kids were a definite minority.

It's out of control here, and I am no exception being at least 25 pounds more than I should be.  But hell, I am a geezer now and gravity is taking hold and ain't getting better  anytime soon so I am pretty much a lost cause.  But kids?  10, 12, 16 years old.....all, or at least MOST, somewhere between 5 and 50 pounds overweight? Unacceptable.  And again, I think it's too late; whole generations of people have gotten fat now, their kids are fat and soon THEIR kids will be fat.  Our mixture of bad, fatty food choices, drinks that are loaded up with sugar and other crap combined with 5 or 6 hours per day laying around watching TV or glued to their fucking computers ain't helping these children any either.

Seeing attractive, slim people gets harder and harder every day now and is at the worst point it's ever been; a perfect time for myself [and anyone else who is ready] to become an ex-pat as soon as possible. Not only are females who are still slim unavailable, but the longer we live in America the longer we have to help pay the health and medical bills for people who can't put down the Taco Bell or Reese's Cups.

A friend from Holland was telling me about his visit to the USA recently; when I asked his impressions the very first thing he said was "I couldn't believe how fat the people were''.  Not "I loved New York and San Francisco''  or "I thought the grand canyon was just awesome'' but more like ''your people are obese MFER's and I couldn't miss it right out of the gate''. Way cool.

Have you seen the portion sizes in US eating establishments. A Medium coke in a popular US chain, is equivalent to Large here.. Is there a link?? Have you noticed that the obese always have something in their mouths.

Is it so difficult to hit three times a week the gym, like I do and pay some attention to what you eat?

An Irish comedian spoke of his time in the US and he said everytime he looked out his hotel window, there was a fit fucker jogging and a fat fucker eating.

I think its just lazy parents. They put no effort in getting their kids out playing sport and are too lazy themselves to cook their kids a decent healthy meal. Then there is TV and video games, as its so much easier to have a kid sitting infront of a TV watching mind numbing shite or playing the lastest grand theft auto game that rewards you for killing hookers. Plus once the kids are brainwashed infront of the TV it means they are not outside playing sports as outside is were all the terrorists and Paedophiles are lurking.

America isnt alone with this problem, I just think they have had it longer. Give it a few more years and the UK and Ireland will be just as bad.

I had a trip through the US a few years back. I travelled with friends & everywhere we found the locals polite & helpful to a fault.

However we were unaccustomed to the quantities of food we were served. What I found worrying was that after a few weeks, we looked forward to our "hearty" breakfasts, big lunches & dinners.

I don't see any hope for change when that would involve holding back food to a population that has grown accustomed to big serves. Imagine offering mini meals to a fat person.

That would be considered worse than a compulsory health system. Ironic when that is something the obese will one day be needing.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

I dont think it's a problem that's exclusive to the States Jai Dee. Television, and it's offshoots, has a lot to answer to. It seems to me there's a hell of a lot more folk than there used to be, especially youngsters, around the globe who now sit, stare and stuff themselves with junk rather than play the sport there ' hooked ' on.

I suggest taxing people by the pound, but other than that its a lost cause.

The combination of laziness, bad diet (shoved down your throat by Big Corporations), and lack of stigma (everyone's fat now !) make it an almost insurmountable problem.
There is one thing that used to help......smoking !

South East Asia, wont be far behind, American fast food establishments are all over both Indonesia & Thailand & where do all the young kids want to eat !
Having never been to the Philippines, but knowing how American influenced they are, I would hazard a guess that they are much worse then Indo & Thailand & with the Spanish gene, they are more likely to become fat fuckers
Guess We are lucky being skinny Irish feckers Tommy

The late night munch ups probably dont help. Like eating a Chicken Vindaloo or Chow Mein at 11p with a few Beers before slumping in to bed

                    As the old saying goes

                    Breakfast like a King
                    Lunch like a Prince
                    Dine like a Pauper

If only i could follow that advice.....

I am already seeing it on UK girls when I travel ......they are starting to look like American women.

                      I guess it was inevitable?

It's not only overeating, it's lack of exercise. These days not enough people earn their wages by the sweat of their brow. Calories in, calories out. I think Americans have had big appetites long before the obesity epidemic. It's just too many people have soft jobs nowadays. Kids don't get outside and play like we used to JD. They sit too long in front of the computer, playing those infernal computer games. I blame PS2s and XBoxes for the fat kids, as much as I blame McDonalds, Burger King, etc.

The old loggers I grew up around, not many were close to our size. Very few over 200 lbs on a 5'11 frame. Most much lighter. But they could sure consume the calories. I remember my 175 lb old man sitting down in a restaurant on a Friday evening, and ordering the biggest sirloin steak they had. When the waitress brought it to the table, with all the usual trimmings, before he even started eating, told her to now throw another one just like it on the grill. The waitress was flabbergasted. She thought he was kidding, but my mom assured her, he was serious.  He ate them both and still had desert afterward.

Very true Seamus. There would be a problem with obesity in the PI. They love fried food there and I remember leaving Dublin airport heading to the Philippines and the amount of fat kids on the flight was amazing. I was told once that the PI has very high heart desease rates aswell.

You might find this hard to believe but I was a fat kid up until I was about 8. I was seriously chubby, but around that age is when I started playing football and started growing in height.

Right now since when I met you in Dublin I go to the gym with a personal trainer 3 days a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday I go swimming, Thursday I run 3km. I have to look after Noon these days. Dont want her to expand with a beer belly.

The global recession hasnt helped the obesity problem either. Sales in fastfood outlets havent been as high in years in Ireland and the UK.

I knew this one Tech Sgt when I was a stationed at Osan, back in the day. He dearly loved to eat. Liked it better than sex. He had a very cute Korean wife too. He used to say if he had to give up either eating or sex, just cut it off, because he liked eating better. You may think this dude was a fat slob. Well, he was about 6'3 and 180 lbs. How could that be? This dude ran the base perimeter road every single morning. I'd see him when he was just finishing sometimes and he would be completely saturated with sweat from head to toe. Made me tired just seeing him. He said he'd rather do that than cut down on how much he ate.

I didn't get chubby until I was married!

As Lefty says, in *our* youth it was all about "you kids get outside, now'' from your Mum and we would play until it was dark out. I was also a basketball fanatic and played it heavily until I was 25 or so, that keeps you slim.

Marriage at age 28 did me in..... she was a great cook and I packed it on, she even complained a few times, as in "I am staying slim and cute for you but you are a fat fuck now'' so I laid off a bit.... but basically for about 15 years now it's been a battle between slimming down to where I wanna be with hardcore exercise routines until I feel comfortable, and then promptly putting it right back on due to crappy dietary choices.

Kids.....well, they are behind the eightball almost from the start these days and as I say I think it's too late to be stopped. Wanna see who is leading the fight against obesity in America and what his food choices are? See below.

RE; PI kids; agreed..... they wanna be just like americans over there so why not EAT like us??
