  • What movie should I see?

It's not just that I am so damned lazy that I can't be moved to think about this myself, but Pacman's description of "Executive Action" & another friend's semi-recommendation of "Men who Stare at Goats" got me thinking, as I was filling out my Netflix queue, that there are probably other damn fine movies out there that weren't big hits that I would never know about unless someone turned me on to them.

I'm not talking exploitation films, experimental films, or big hit films.. but smaller quality flicks that get lost, or forgotten about, like "Executive Action". Something entertaining & smart. A few examples: "Rabbitproof Fence", "The Sea Inside" , "Afterlife" (Japanese), "Ace in the Hole" (vintage).

Help me fill out my Netflix lineup. To get started I'll recommend a couple for you.

"A Simple Plan" 3 regular guys in a small town accidently come into possession of a large amount of cash that may or may not be illicit, & their lives are forever changed. Very good acting, including Billy Bob Thorton; directed by Sam Raimi just before he did the Spiderman movies.

"Saint Jack" A must see for anyone here: An American expat (Ben Gazzara) runs a whorehouse in Singapore in the 1970s. Shot semi surrepticiously (sp?) on location in the old Singapore that doesn't exist anymore by Bogdanavich.

I'm downloading 'A Simple Plan.' Thanks for that tip...

    My three tips would be...

    Sneakers (1992) IMDB

Often overlooked, well paced comedy drama about a team of security experts hired to steal a code breaking device. The line up of talent is truly impressive...

    Suicide Kings (1997) IMDB

A minor hit but a major role for the menacing Christopher Walken. Some rich college kids kidnap a retired gangster and hold him hostage... but slowly the tables are turned. Denis Leary shows off his hard guy character here also.

    Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) IMDB

The title probably rings a bell but this poweful drama is well worth your time. Jack Lemmon gives the best performance of his life and even the usually fucking annoying Al Pacino tones down his act and turns in a good show. A wordy drama around scumbag salesmen...

Those who like Glengarry Glen Ross will probably also enjoy House of Games (1987).

I also saw GGGR on Broadway, excellent.

Powaqqatsi (1988) collage of many places with soundtrack, no dialogue. Circular, as it comes back to where it starts.

Synopsis: Sequel to "Koyaanisqatsi" contrasting urban life with images of nature and Third World impressions. Musical score by Philip Glass.

        Directed by Godfrey Reggio
Powaqqatsi was the second of the feature-length "non narrative" films produced, directed and co-scripted by Godfrey Reggio. As in his earlier Koyaanisqatsi, Reggio utilizes a collage of sounds and gimmicked-up images to make a comment on modern life. And as in the earlier film, Reggio's onslaught of imagery is backed up by the music of Philip Glass. This time, Reggio concentrates on Third World cultures, and the way those cultures are perceived and sometimes exploited by the power merchants of the world. Powaqqatsi was supposed to be the second in a trilogy, but wasn't as eagerly embraced by viewers and critics as its popular predecessor. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

          Tuvalu ...

... is a 1999 experimental movie from Germany. The style evokes early 20th Century Silent movies and motifs commonly found in German expressionism. The sparse dialog is presented in a mix of European languages. The film stars Denis Lavant as Anton and Chulpan Khamatova as Eva.

In a desolate and colorless landscape stands a dilapidated bathhouse run by a puffed-up blind man, his long-suffering wife, and their son Anton, who does all the work. He's lonely and unsophisticated, and he falls in love with the beautiful Eva, who comes to bathe with her father. When Eva and her father lose their home, they come to the bathhouse to stay, but bits of the ceiling fall on the old man and he dies. Eva blames Anton, and she seems to seek the arms of the brute Gregor. Can Anton win back her heart, get the bathhouse through a rigorous government inspection, and help keep his parents employed? Waiting out there somewhere is the paradise isle of Tuvalu.

Like Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi, Tuvalu is a movie based on a strong visual language rather than dialogue.

An unjustly ignored future underground classic is "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' with Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr. A confusing plot with a very funny ending.

If you appreciate wanton violence and a cleverly constructed story you must watch 'Smokin' Aces'. I've watched it at least 6 times and it still makes me laugh so much it hurts. Apparently they have made a follow up now, but I haven't had time to 'borrow' it yet'

I downloaded The Hurt Locker on piratebay the same week it was released and it was a perfect copy. A great film too.

Men who stare at goats was very good aswell. Another one not getting a mention is Harry Brown starring Micheal Cain. I went to see that one in the cinema and thought it was good. A great performance by Cain. It could be described as a British version of Gran Torino.

Am downloading Green Zone aswell. Have always been a Matt Damon fan since the Jason Bourne films, which El_Hefe if you have not seen would be a good choice. The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremecy, and The Bourne Ultimatum. Word is Robert Ludlum is writing another Jason Bourne book to be made into a film. He is the american version of James Bond, only 100 times better.

                          In Bruges...

Dwarfs, drugs, hookers and hitmen...Don't get much better than that...

Ray (hitman): Why didn't you wave hello to me today when I waved hello to you today?
Jimmy (dwarf): I was on a very strong horse tranquilizer today; Wasn't waving hello to anybody. Except... maybe to a horse.
Ray: Huh? What are you talking about?
                          Jimmy: Just horseshit.
                          Ray: You from America?
Jimmy: Yeah. Don't hold it against me.
Ray: Well, that's for me to decide, isn't it?
Ray: [to Denise - hooker] You from America too?
                          Denise: No, I'm from Amsterdam.
Ray: Amsterdam! Amsterdam's just a lot of bloody prostitutes, isn't it?
Denise: Yes, that's why I came to Bruges. Been trying to get a better price for my pussy here.
                          Ray: Huh?
                          [pause]
Ray: You two are weird. Would you like some cocaine?

Anthony, The Hurt Locker was made in 2008 and released early this year and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS in 2009 so if you're going to do a best since comparison it's better to go for a longer time frame.
