(Lefty @ May 05 2009,04:05) Inside the USA, ok, blacks still dominate.
errr, that's where I live....and as I mentioned waaaaay back, I barely even know boxing
Rocky Marciano grew up about 45 minutes south of here and is still a legend, and was a great fighter for sure...... but my childhood memories [I am a bit too young to remember him] are filled with guys like Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman, Tommy Hearns and S.R. Leonard, et al.... and later on guys like Hagler [same town as Marciano BTW] Holyfield, Tyson, Mayweather, the Spinks brothers and Larry Holmes.... black gents one and all.
Just to throw my take in there. you know fighters usually come from a background of poverty. In the 30s, 40, and 50s there were TONS of white who were world class fighters of many weight classes. New York was the center of the boxing world then and, guess what, there were a lot of slums that contained Jews, Irish, Italians i.e. lots of white European immigrants. Back then fighters fought once or twice a month and made a living at it. Only the top fighters made it to the big time i.e The Garden. Now boxing used to be the most popular sport back then. There was almost NO televised sports back then and boxing was a huge spectator sport. Baseball was only during the day-people worked. Pro football wasnt popular in fact college football was much more popualr than the pros. Basketbal not much infact here again college hoops was much more popular until the CCNY scandal in the 50's. Just food for thought......
Blue balls is correct poverty breeds fighters, not race or creed.,
Just one more little link for you boxing fans, Ever heard of a fighter called joey Giardello?? middle weight from the 50-60s, new yorker i believe. Most guy' who know about boxing will know the name.
Now comes to my reason why i posted his name. You guys must have seen the movie the Hurricain, about Rubin Carter, ya ya same guy who the songs about could have been the champion of the world..I watched that movie and was sick in the guts at the way Holliwood portaid Joey Giardello's fight for the word middle weight title with Rubin Carter> they made it like a roberry and poor rubin carter was robbed, fuck no, in any boxing magazine such as the Ring the fight was the other way with a clear win to Giardello. The movie people settled the case(law suit) out of court, but nothing much a was said about it.
I hate Holliwood . Good on ya Joey Giardello and rip poor bloke died a few months ago http://www.badlefthook.com/2008/9/5/...ello-1930-2008http://www.badlefthook.com/2008/9/5/...ello-1930-2008
