You would think he & his brother were Irish with names like that. But they are a pair of Twats from Manchester that think they were as big as the Beatles
(robbo @ Apr. 12 2009,08:03) ... i remember being in LOS when thaksin was democratically elected for pm,here in the uk we have a pm that joe public didnt elect......so whats democracy? eh? ...
Thaksin was not elected, democratically or otherwise. The PM iss merely appointed by the party/coalition that is elected.
Thaksin was the personification of the party elected, indeed he "was the party".
it was perfectly clear to thais that he would be pm should they elect Thai Rak Thai.
they were elected fairly or unfairly, about on a par with what happens in the uk.
in the uk we have a ruling government that was not elected by the majority of the people and a pm who was elected by none......................so whos right or wrong here? mayby thailand is more democratic than the uk?

What are you talking about? The UK does not have an election system where you vote for a PM. It is a parliamentary democracy. You vote for the party.
And in the UK you have a government that was elected by the transparent rules of the election ie first past the post in several hundred constituencies. All very well defined and transparent to anyone who wants to contest the election.
I agree with Robbo... even if the semantics of the electoral process were not clear to the voting population (and obviously it wasn't) the vote was in effect for HIM and not the party.
If you asked a Thai person who they voted for they would say the name of the leader of the party and NOT the constituent head of their local division.

Nearly but not quite! You vote for a candidate in your local constituency who may or may not be a member of a party.
A party with a majority of seats (or a coalition) is then invited by the sovereign to put forward a leader.
The person who is 'invited to the palace' does not necessarily have to have been elected (eg. Lord Salisbury in the 19th C).
- or so far as I am aware even be in the same party - or be a Member of Parliament!
In Thailand's case they vote the same way as the UK (for a local candidate) and the party then puts forward their choice to the sovereign.
Not sure if they have the same total lack of rules about who can be put forward though!
All the Thai's I have talked to either voted or did not for Taksin - no mention of TRT.

Pedants rule, OK. Or more precisely, exhibit certain of the conventional trappings of leadership.

thankyou stogie, and yes Stewart you may be correct in your understanding of how the system is set out and is supposed to work, but the realities and practical implications are often different.this is whats known as the real world ,where bullshite, corruption, lies, incompetence are the order of the day.add to that that most people who "tick a box" havnt got a clue what they are doing or letting themselves in for
and im talking about the uk as much as thailand.
correct Stewart i stated that we did not elect our pm, and this is part of the problem,i knew what i was saying.
i am right in what i stated, and you correct in your comment.
but please.........."transparent rules" dont delude yourself, ive lived in the uk long enough.
