wow, never thought I'd see THESE places up here! Good choice Dieter
I liked these 2 cities also.... Londonderry has a "city within a city" which is fantastic and so old, so much history there.... also one of the places where "the troubles" [modern era] started with a young Martin McGuinness and pals from the Bogside lobbing rocks and bottles at the RUC. This was taken at Derry facing away from the river, note mural lower left..... on the way here from the south the official signs say Londonderry but the London is always blotted out by some local anti- loyalists.
Loved Belfast also, great city and so much to see and learn and to actually see the places you have been reading about since the late 70's is fascinating. The troops are gone now, it's calm now but there is still a figuritive chill in the air and when you walk down the Falls Road or the Shankhill the tension is palpable. * Irishmen note; if you think you get bad service and dirty looks when you go to Ulster because you're Irish, try being Irish- American! a double whammy.
note clouds in every photo! this ain't the place to go for a tan
Sinn Fein HQ on the Falls Road ..... you have to ring a buzzer to get in to the book store on left, someone looks out and either says ye or nay I guess depending on how you look. we went in and shopped around and bought a few things, it's hard to explain how it feels being in Belfast after 30 [300?] years of constant war, kind of other-worldly.
This city produced one of the best punk bands of ever also, Stiff Little Fingers..... little-known fact; the Titanic was built here!
Actually, before I list everywhere, I like everywhere. I've done a shitload of travelling in my time and, with the obvious exception of Kuwait, I enjoyed every moment.
Typically, bad experiences were of my own making or freakish bad circumstances and good experiences happened over and over again without trying. The world is a great place to visit.
Special mention to pre-breakup Dubrovnik. Spend my 25th birthday there in 1984 and it was so beautiful. I believe I'd be less enthused now but I can't confirm.
But did you try asking them for a party manifesto?
Not the present sanitised one - the one they used to put out in the 1960's and 70's
It mentions uniting Ireland - I'm of Irish ancestory myself and think it should have happened as was planned in 1914 until WW1 messed up the timetable.
It also mentions that it will be a one party state - that party being Sinn Fein
And Sinn Feins' politics in those days? - Maoism.
I somehow think they forgot to mention the above to the people who used to put money into NORAID
RR.
Pedants rule, OK. Or more precisely, exhibit certain of the conventional trappings of leadership.
