  • The best vacation places!

    1] Thailand
By far.... sure it's a cliche to say that on this board and kinda obvious also of course, but after visting about 20 countries and 20 US states in the past 10 years or so it wins by a landslide.   for this message boards purposes, it has ladyboys and great nightlife and beautiful ladies as well;  for people who like beaches and scuba diving and swimming, etc, it has that also.  good exchange on your cash and many other benefits make this the best vacation spot on earth  IMO..... weird people, cops and government aside.

    2] Ireland
Beautiful country, friendly people, awesome scenery......depends on your perspective of course, but as a yank with 100% Irish origins it was nice to get back to the ol' sod for the first time and with a very special travel partner ..... we even found the small town in Meath county literally with our name on it! Recommended to anyone who wants to see their roots, you will not be dissapointed.

    3] Prague
Want to go back in time 500 years? Walk the same streets that knights and monks and other assorted medieval people walked?   See the Charles Bridge and 12th century castles and weird architecture and cobblestone streets, while also seeing a city which is quickly moving into the modern age and yet was part of the eastern bloc just 18 years ago?  Go here.

    4] Cambodia
yes, you must have an interest in some weird things to have this on your favorites list {I am sure many would add it to a 'worst' list}..... but if you like dirt-biking and seeing the countryside of a very trippy and other-worldly place, try this place out for more than just a visa run sometime.  Also  with Angkor Wat and white sand beaches down south, there is more to this country than most people are lead to believe; been there about 15 times in 10 years and can't wait to go back, some of the nicest people on earth live here. Stay with some locals, they are very welcoming; skip the usual tours and see the REAL Cambo.

    5] Italy
Some people may also have a love-hate relationship with this place, who knows; what I do know is I got a small sample of it in 2007 and want to see more!  Great good, friendly people, beautiful women, awesome architecture and history galore...... not to mention Lido beach on the Adriatic and sunset [and sunrise!] setting and rising over Venice.... just a great place IMO

    6] Amsterdam
before they banned the sale of fresh magic mushrooms in 2007, this was literally the BEST party city in the world, bar none.  Coffee shops on every block which sell much more than just coffee, great nightlife, beautiful women, constant fun, cool architecture, great shopping, international food of every type, etc, etc, etc..... never cared much for the red light district, if I want sex there is Thailand and I only tried those small booths 1 time in the 60 + days I have been there; sex is not the reason to go here, everything else is.

    7] Vietnam
Amazing country;  had been enticed to see this weird and trippy place since I was a small boy growing up in america and seeing it on the telly nightly..... saw it first in 1998 and have been back about 10 times since.  Wonderful, friendly people, great food, very cheap; also white-sand beaches all along the coast, Phu Quoc island, Saigon with its 5 million people and organized chaos with only about 25% of the intersections even having a red light...... jump on a moto and join in the fun!

    8] Hong Kong
Another place people may say "how the fuck could he like it THERE?"  but to me it's a great city..... awesome food, great nightlife [open till 6am], beautiful ladies, hookers from 10 countries vying for your attention, cheap [compared to the USA, Europe or Tokyo that is, pricey by BKK standards], fun, nice architecture, also organized chaos in the traffic patterns, etc....  took one of the ATS models here for 3 nights in 2005, fought the whole time [of course] and it sucked.  went back alone a year later and  fell in love with the place, can't wait to go back.  [footnote; ever notice when you travel alone places are much better??]

    9]Salzburg
    In Western Austria,  the setting for The Sound of Music and a lovely place..... surrounded by mountains and lakes, great scenery, friendly people, etc..... this city was established 500 years ago and still looks like it's stuck in about 1725..... basically Germany but without any German people!  {sorry,  Deiter}

    10] Montreal
One of the top 10 cities in the world IMO...... save for crappy weather, too cold in winter and too hot in summer [the place is on an island after all!], this place has it all; they get their fashion and style from Paris, have great nightlife, large parks to walk around in, the old seaport dates back to the 1500's and their Old Town is lovely...... been here at least 50 times and can't wait to return, if you've never been you have no idea just how lovely it is.
Guilt is Gods way of telling you you're having too much fun.

I somehow lost interest in holidays intended in the traditional way, and getting bored quite easily
However, before this state of mind did set it, I used to take my good 8-10 days of holidays every 4-5 months or so.

Two places that I truly believe to be unique are The Galapagos Islands and Tibet.
I visited them years ago, so I may expect now to be a bit less fascinating due the higher number of tourists visiting there.
Do only what you think it's good for you, and not what others think should be good for you!

Thailand and Bali are great values, a tourist friendly infrastructure, and easy to get laid. Don't underestimate the importance of sex.

In my recommendation is New Orleans.

St John has a good vibe but a bit pricey.

I like Italy but the exchange rate sucks these days.

London  -  as Samuel Johnson said anyone who says they are tired of London is tired of life.

Just about any other part of the UK.

Australia  -  some of the most remarkable scenery to see on the planet and really friendly people

Beijing  -  The Forbidden City  -  power architecture on a serious scale.

And the only part of the USA that I ever got to see properly  -  round Richmond Virginia     beautiful.
(Yes I know there is lots more but I've never had the chance     )

                          1. Thailand - obviously

                          2. Amsterdam (see Buttafly's post - he pretty much nailed it)

                          3. Stockholm - very friendly and laid-back people. Nice place to chill

                          4. Japan - probably biased as I lived there but this place never seems to amaze me with it's weirdness and quirkiness. every day is an adventure. And, in winter, all girlies dress in mini-skirts and leather knee-high boots. So alluring! Also, the computerised toilets deservce a mention - more processing power than my laptop!

                          5. Australia - especially Melbourne and Brisbane (don't like Sydney). Nice mix of big city and nature all in the one place. And Barbies!!!!!!!!

                          6. New England - Massachusets and New Hampshire. COuntryside here in Autumn is beautiful. Very relaxing.(Dave Duke - did you know there are about 6 Manchesters in NE?) I also generally find Americans to be amazingly nice, friendly and genuine people - especially when they find out I'm Irish :-)

                          7. Canada - British Columbia (great scenery, outdoors, skiing etc)

                          8. Portugal - Lisbon. Nice people, friendly taxi drivers, great nightlife and Brazilian restaurants (also, probably cheapest country in western europe)

                          9. Erlangen (Germany) - best beer festival in the world called the Berg. Forget about touristy Munich - this is the place to gorge on pig-knuckle and get sozzled on quality German beer without crappy hangover from bloody chemicals. Also, German people in Bavaria are amazingly nice - I love 'em (in my opinion, the nicest people I've ever met)

                          10. Jordan (yes - in the middle East). If you like a historic kind of holiday, this has some of the best sites from Holy Land, Roman times, Byzantine era etc. Most laid-back of the Middle-East countries. Belly dancer bars (not far off strip clubs) where everyone is drinking coffee instead of beer (strange but fun). Very friendly people - regardless of where you come from

                          11. Belfast - great Victorian architecture, Ulster Fry, soda bread, potato farrls, great bars and clubs, locals' sense of humour... if you come to Ireland, make sure you hit Belfast. Too many people never leave Dublin

                          12. Hong Kong - food and bars and shopping

                          13. The Lakes in Northenr Italy - e.g. Como, Garda. Beside Sqitzerland and also easy drive from Milan. Beautiful scenery, great food and drink, great people-spotting (gorgeous women)

                          14. France - Paris and Cote D'Azur . Rude french people are very funny, good food, fantastic architecture in Paris, Versailles, history, nice weather in Cote d'Azur. What's not to like?
                          No honey, no money!!

                            (my) best vacation spots:
                            1. thailand -- so far, i've loved every trip, every city, every island, and almost every ladyboy.
                            2. ambergris caye, belize -- largest coral reef in western hemisphere. inexpensive. great food, people, adventures -- including a swim with sharks and rays or an easy daytrip to the pyramids of guatemala.
                            3. sedona, arizona, usa -- harmonic convergence. red dust everywhere. not 4 everyone. a total escape.
3(alternate). big sur, california, usa -- spiritual perfection. redwoods and ocean cliffs and a fine alternative for those who would prefer their mountain cabin to overlook the ocean, rather than the desert.
4.charleston, south carolina, usa -- i'm pretty sure this town will be on *nobody's* list. unforgettable food. beautiful architecture. as much history as the New World can offer. and cradled in a low country crowded with world-class golf courses and white sand beaches, only minutes away.
4(alternate). new orleans, louisiana, usa -- it's pretty much down to the french quarter and the garden district now, unless you're one of those people who can see your way to doing volunteer work on your vacation. but it's still the only place in the usa (some would say the planet) to get better food than charleston.
