(newwriter @ Oct. 14 2007,06:20) I hope this doesn't sound ungracious but England are great at winning ugly. They are extremely powerful at scrum and their work at ruck and maul has been brilliant.
It's sooo ugly, but sooo effective. Really hard to play against. Wallabies and French better teams skill-wise across the 15 but the game isn't won by just skill.
As s lifetime fan of the game I love to see great rugby winning games (see All Blacks) but these tight games are nothing about pretty and all about ticker, power and aggression and the English have it in spades.
To the Englishmen on the site, congrats. If, as expected, it gets down to England / SA please beat those arrogant cunts. What an irony it would be if England were to lose 36-0 to a side in pool and then beat them in the final.
England have re-organised their defence since the start of the tournament...
There's been a lot of talk about pre-tournament preparation and England came bottom in the press and pundits view in the on-line scribblings that I read. The media gave a lot of desk-jocks the chance to say how poorly England was prepared to play this tournament.
But here they are... (AGAIN!) in the world cup final!
Are they hitting form at the right time? Are they just talented? Do they play their best games against the best opposition they face?
After slipping past Australia and France you have to think that they are feeling confident about whoever they face in the final... (but I do so hope it's the Argies!!!)
4 weeks ago we were worried we would actually beat Tonga and Samoa, now we are in a World Cup Final for the second time running. I think all the elements came together at the right time.
We are now playing as a team and with belief. This is not the same team that lost 36-0 to SA, they are playing with heart. The Pack is awesome and the backs are coming to life.
It will be interesting to see hoe SA fare against an invigorated Argentine team, but I cant wait for the final!
seriously pig headed, arrogant, double standard smart ass poster!
Ugly or pretty... does 'skill' have a flavour? An advantage of 'skill' is the talent that makes a person (or team) better than his opponent.
OK, point taken. I refer to those skills that are what people think of as individual rugby skills - catching, passing, running, tackling, kicking etc.
Nobody would deny England are not in the best four in the world for those skills. They are a team able to control the tempo and style of a match.
That in itself is a skill but a single skill. Thus, less skilled in general. I suspect if you ask real English rugby fans that smile and admit it was true but say "we won didn't we?" and they'd be right and fair play to them.
(stogie bear @ Oct. 14 2007,06:31) Whether you like the way it comes across as a TV image shouldn't really impact the respect you have for the result.
Ah, but there is the rub. I DO care how it looks. We in Australia (and many other nations where rugby is not the number one sport i.e. everywhere but NZ and SA) want the game promoted.
I want the RWC to be a showpiece that sells our beautiful game to non-believers. I want it won with style. I would never begrudge a team from winning any way they can (it's what players work their careers for after all) but I would PREFER that the cup is one by the team with the most skilled players and who play the best rugby.
I have many English mates and I was very happy for them to win in 2003 for they were clearly the world's best side and capable of playing magnificent powerful rugby.
This side leaves me cold I'm afraid and there's little I can do about that except acknowledge how efficient they are at the brand of rugby they play.
You shouldn't have a problem promoting rugby to a wider audience... look at soccer... that stupid game is riddled with inconsistancies and it's the most popular game in the world!

My view precisely but for some reason other people don't get it.
Rugby offers the opportunity to kick, smash and belt opponents and all that is asked of you is that you don't touch the referee or question his decisions.
There's also a spot for a fat, thin, short and tall kid in every team.
Who wouldn't love that game?
Whilst I'm romanticising, how about a LB rugby team? Post match baths would be a shitload of fun.
