Actually I dont see the correlation...nicotine is a strong enough drug, why would you need anything else.  Seems as though smokers need their fix a hell of a lot more than heroine abusers or crackheads.  I also think alcohol is a drug but nowhere near as addicting as cigarettes.

Now marijuana is something different.  It's under the category of medicinal herb.  

The "drug continuum" always begins with nicotine at one end...!!

I waded in to explain more, but it sounds like Stogie pretty much got it.

I thought I pretty clearly explained it the first time around, smoking doesn't make you do drugs. You can of course find all kinds of correlations, like Bugs Bunny fans like to smoke pot, that doesn't mean... whatever. That divertwo guy pretty much explained all that well.

High time preference defines people who want their pleasures now. If correlations and demographic similarities didn't prove to be useful, detectives would never solve any crimes, no one would ever be able to predict the winner of a sports match, the insurance business would not exist, the game of chess wouldn't work, etc. etc. etc.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to fire up all that personal animosity. I don't see why people get so angry with each other over these topics - although I'll have to admit I fall for it some time myself.

At any rate, someone asked for more info, you can find information about time preference and high time preference people in any economics book and all over the web. Search for "time preference" and "economics", that should keep you busy for days.

Summary

We report a comparative study of drug consumption by 277 female prostitutes and 95 women who had never worked as prostitutes, attending the Sydney STD Centre in 1985 and 1987.

Marijuana was the drug most often used by prostitutes and non-prostitutes, followed by sleeping pills, amphetamines, cocaine and heroin. About 12% in both groups used intravenous drugs but prostitutes were significantly more likely to share needles and syringes.

Prostitutes were also more likely to smoke cigarettes than non-prostitutes, and young prostitutes smoked significantly more heavily than other women in the study.

This is a mine field. Nobody smokes in my room ever, full stop. I prefer to take someone who does not smoke at all, but either way they won't be smoking while they are with me, full stop. I prefer outdoor bars as it's easier to dodge smoke.

Anecdotally a nicotine habit is harder to give up than heroin; More people that smoke will partake in other habits of the drug kind than non smokers, especially if that involves fire/heat, I def know many more smokers than non smokers that use drugs. YMMV
