  • The Sad and Pathetic state of clubs in Thailand

OK, let me first start out by qualifying a few things:

    1) Nothing in this post should be read as a criticism of the new Guess bar. If you think I'm criticizing that place, you misunderstand me and need to learn to speak fucking English .

    2) I've never been to the Guess bar (but I'll probably get there eventually), so anything I say about it is based entirely on photos and comments I've seen here. If I'm wrong, oh well, sue me .

OK, disclaimers out of the way, here's what I want to say:

The fact that everyone's making such a big deal out of the new Guess bar doesn't really mean that it's all that fucking amazing, rather, it just points out how sad and pathetic the "nightlife" options are in Thailand.

Guess looks like a nice place, and I wish Jay all the luck she can get, because that place deserves to succeed. However, if you took that place and opened it in practically any other city in the world, it'd be an decent, but average, joint.

Here in Bangkok, though, it looks like a fucking swanky hi-so club, only because the other options are sooo bad they'd make a graveyard-shift at Denny's look more entertaining.

Nana's a fucking fire trap, and anyone going in there is just asking to have their drink spiked, their wallet lifted, and some yaa-baa crazed psycho waking up their neighbors the next morning screaming, "You pay me song pan baht or I cut you!"

Patpong is worse, because you can't even get into the place without running the gamut of touts, tuk-tuk drivers, and arm-grabbing doormen.

Then there's Soi Cowboy, which is just fucking amazing,.... if 40 year-old, pot-bellied, battle-weary, and toothless women are your thing.

    I just don't get it.

I mean, collectively, as a group we come here with WAY more money (relatively speaking) than the average Thai or Chinese business man, and yet the places they frequent are fucking palaces compared to our options.

A drive up Ratchaphisek proves my point. They have huge hotels with clean rooms that usually have jacuzzi baths and lots of mirrors.

We get dark, seedy shit-holes, roach/rat-infested short-time rooms with cum-stained mattresses, and the RUDEST FUCKING THAI PEOPLE IN THE WORLD!!

How many times have you gone into a place and been mobbed by a bunch of pushing amazons who get pissed off if you don't immediately barfine them (I mean, if I actually want to sit in the bar, watch the show and relax with a drink, they are fucking shocked!).

And how many times has some pushy, obnoxious waitress stuck her hand out for a tip, after breaking her back bringing you a fucking napkin.

Just the other day, some ladyboy at Obsessions started rubbing my head as I walked through the door. I've lived in Thailand long enough to know that's just about the rudest fucking thing a Thai person can do to you and I damn near punched her for it. When I told her to knock it off, she got all snotty about it, like she felt she had the right to do any goddamn thing she wanted to me because I was just a fucking walking ATM and didn't deserve the barest minimum of respect that would be given to a fucking bum on the street.

So I have to wonder, why the fuck do we put up with this crap? I mean, I realize most guys are coming here just to get pissed and get fucked, but COME ON. Those shit-holes are taking in half-a-million baht (or more) a week, the least they could do is give us decent service, a cool atmosphere, and clean sheets.

I shouldn't have to wipe some guy's vomit off the seat before I sit down (or have the staff give me a dirty look for insisting that they do it). I shouldn't have to risk breaking my neck to climb some dark, unlit staircase just to find a smelly, shit-stained toilet in a shabby little closet.

Some of us post regularly on other forums, some of us have travel websites (or porn websites ), and some of us have blogs or write columns for other people's sites.

I say we start a mass "re-education" campaign on the internet. We start spreading the word that we SHOULD get A LOT more for our money, and the standard in Bangkok/Pattaya should no longer be acceptable.

Let's start encouraging people to vote with their wallets and avoid the shit-holes. Maybe some day someone will get a clue and tear down Nana and put up a really nice place instead. Same services, of course, but it should be as clean as a fucking shopping mall, with fountains, and Vegas-style neon displays, and porters to carry our bags to the 4-star hotel out back, and decent restaurants, and GOOD nightclubs with international quality DJs, and kickass bars with 20 billard tables (with plenty of room for them) and hard-rocking live bands that DON'T play Hotel California!

Is that too much to ask? Fuck no. That'd be the bare minimum. Given the amount of money these fucking mafia-types make from the bar-fines, bar rentals, alcohol sales, and short-time hotel rates, that should be the barest minimum of what we should get.

Yeah, this is a rant, so I don't expect much, but at least I can get it off my chest.

Again, no offense to the Guess bar, but if that place is so fucking amazing, then it's because everything else is a fucking waste of time.

I propose a massive boycott of every shit hole in Thailand until they fucking clean up their act and start giving us our money's worth.

What say you, gents? Who's with me! (John Belushi-ish "Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!" and charge out of the room!)

hang on ... its a free world aint it. You dont have to go in these places, as ive said before....what you see is what you get. I dont think the go go bars pretend to be swanky swish night clubs with the complimentary olives and club sandwich .

The girly drink in Nana is 130 baht... wow ,,thats really goner break the bank...Do you think an upmarket club could charge this..........no way...

Do you think you are going to get a short time dame in a swanky club for 2K......no way.........

Nana is not a Moscow Bitch Bar where all the girls have degrees , play chess and can talk about Uranium decay.
your expectations are to high my friend.

Great post, Doug and I agree with most of what you say.

But if a Guess bar was opened in my home town I'd move back there tomorrow. I'm not in love with this country at all. It's simple really - I can afford to live well here and screw lbs and ggs any time I point and say "Oi , woman... get your kit off - you're next!"

I probably won't go back to a shit pit ever again unless someone's buying me drinks! And even then it'll be just the one and I'm gone.

I agree completely that 135 Baht for a beer which retails for 25 Baht in the convenience store across the same street is too much and we should get ice and lemon and the wait staff should be sucking my dick, not busting my balls for a fucking drink!

Nana is a great place to find a ladyboy to fuck and it's for tourists only. Patpong is just for the mentally deranged and Soi Cowboy is for the blind!

Yes - The Guess bar IS great, but only partly because the other bars are so shitty! It's also great because I would go to a bar like this even if the other places around it were fantastic. It's like a ladyboy lovers 'Cheers!' Everyone knows your name!

I can meet a shag there, take a shag there and even watch a shag there (judging by Janes behaviour there just recently!)

I think you are off the mark about the amount of disposable income that the Chinese and Japanese bring intro this section of the biz though. Those people have money to burn!

ummm, you can visit the 'swanky' clubs in Racahadapisek. The prices are the same for farangs as they are for Asians. This means we have agreat choice from the seediness of Cowboy to the 'swankiness' of Rachadapisek plus all the choices in the rest of the city (I've been to some interesting places in Nonthaburi and Thonburi for example). Not bad I think
Back in the scene after a couple of years away. And no that does not mean I was residing at her majesty's pleasure. God it is good to be back among the girls with that bit extra!

What has been posted by Doug made me scratch my head as there are plenty of excellent night spots in Bangkok.

All the places you mention in your post. Nana, Cowboy, Patpong etc and Soi 1 Sukhumvit most guys that live here rarely go to. Even if they do from time to time, it is not to make friends if you know what I mean.

A few years ago the nightlife really started getting better, classy bars (ie one where the word barfine would not be understood), with many bar owners (hotels and such) trying to figure out how to keep any freelancers or working girls out.

So there are plenty of classy bars, there are quite a few even upmarket companion bars.

There are great places in Bangkok for swanky joints with gorgeous girls.
            GIRLS.
You tell me a hi-so spot with LB and I'll get a membership tomorrow...but it don't exist.

Many people are excited about Guess Bar because it is a nice relaxing Ladyboy Bar
If it were a GG bar it wouldn't be anything special.

Hmm..unfortunately, like most things in Asia, there is nothing in the middle.
I've been to both Ratchada places and Nana & Co. The first place being treats from customers (the usual chinese rich businessmen) and the latter treats from my own thin wallet.
The situation is very simple - Ratchada places are nice, with VERY pretty girls and quite expensive. Most of the girls in the Ratchada Clubs girls give very poor fucks! I had three so far and the one who lasted longer without complaining that I was pumping her too hard with my "HUGE" 6 - 3/4" tool, it was for 8 minutes. Then started to complain and whining. They are used to the mushy and silly ways of playing karaoke and all the bullshits the local men are looking for, such as looking for a nice/pretty/almost-virgin g/f in a club..go figure!
At Nana you go the rough deal..you wanna a fuck..you get it, quick and relatively cheap. Too expensive for the locals, that will get even rougher affairs in BKK outskirts and not classy enough for the local businessmen who consider us as horny animals - I've been told that rather plainly when one of my customers brought me to a Ratchada Club..the fucker said: "Hey, be careful..here's NOT Nana"
              Duh...fucking idiot is he!
Also, the farang tourists coming to BKK do not likely need nor seek for the frills but want a quick and ready to obtain fuck.
Personally, I don't like Nana and hate Patpong, not to mention Cowboy that has become a pathetic and ridiculous institution.
I wouldn't mind classier places but on the other hand wouldn't be interested in paying much more than what Nana has to offer.
Do only what you think it's good for you, and not what others think should be good for you!

The two cents of a rookie....

Most guys probably save their pennies all year to spend two weeks in Thailand...You can sit at Big Dogs and watch them come into NEP with looks of wonder and big smiles on their faces...And I'd bet the same guys come back the next night and the next until they have to get on a plane and go home...

You guys that live in LOS full or part-time...of course you have a different perspective...and you rightly should...But your perspective ain't gonna keep Joe Blow from Nonameville, California out of NEP...Guys don't go to NEP to have a relaxing drink or two...And I don't think any amount of negative ranting will keep him at home...Might keep him from joining a Forum like this one...But not from joining the throngs in Thailand...

As far as the Guess Bar is concerned, I hope it is a success too...But the truth is, if there is not a girl in the bar that I want to be with, I won't spend every waking hour there...I'm gonna go to the bar where the girl works that I want...Shitpit that it might be...Likely go back to the Guess Bar for a drink or two...lady willing...

The way to change the NEP and other bars is for the Guess Bar to be succesful and for other like bars to spring up...Competition will create change not rants...

The drink pricing in bars is the same all over...I recently paid $3 USD for a watered down coke in Divas in SF...and just the other day on my way to visit relatives for the holidays in Norcal, I stopped at a bar in a one-horse town of a few hundred people and paid $6.50 USD for a gin and tonic...Sure you can go to the convenience store and buy a can of coke or the liquor store and buy a bottle of gin and go home and sit in the closet and have a drink for a lot less...but that isn't why folks go to bars...whether a shitpit bar in NEP or a "...swanky club in Racahadapisek..."

Probably way off base, but just a newbie's two cents...

All well put. But even though it would be nice to have better places, I personaly think that the seedy nature is what attracts people. There is something about coming from a "sanitized" culture such as the US and being able to experience those dark, sleezy, and precieved dangerous places. I personaly enjoy the sleeze factor. Not that I wouldnt enjoy more options. Remember most of these clubs are basicly whore houses, (no flaming please) and the girls who work there are prostitutes. Not a thing wrong with that, but it is pretty unlikely that they are going to take on the look and feel of some high class club. I know there are exceptions but not many.

Come on chaps... is it really that bad....

To be honest i never been to any upmarket club in BKK..
i was thinking about the other rip off joints in Hong Kong and Taipei and assumed that prices would be pro rata in BKK swanky clubs. So perhaps i was wrong in assuming prices are higher than normal bars.

                    anyway
As i tourist i think ive lower expectations that you lucky buggers( no pun intended) that live there.

Im afraid ive been stuck in the gogo groove for 17 years

Pretty much sums up why Jay opened Guess Bar - The Thai's know full well that Nana is a shithole and can't believe how much money us 'dumb' farang spend in there - but we do and so basically the owners no incentive to upgrade. Forget the owners of the Nana building by the way - there is nothing to stop the business owners upgrading. But will they? Unlikely based on how many people were in Obsession last night as a example. Dont get me started on all thats wrong with that place and one drink just confirmed it and back to Guess Bar we went. But dont forget, one of the biggest inhibitors to any 'peer pressure' is the fact that you cannot get a gogo licence anymore. The only ones that will be renewed are for existing gogo bars. Therefore, there will be NO new entrants unless someone buys out another gogo and decides to radically change the offering, style, ambience whatever - but I dont see thats very likely to happen anytime soon.

                        Cheers

My first time in KC3, I picked a girl to sit next to me, then picked another. The first seemed like a cold fish, so I BF'ed the second. Immediately all the girls swarmed me and demanded I give the first girl a 500 baht "tip" for her loss of face. Is this a common scam?

The key phrase is "first time"......they can sense it.

Great white sharks can sense 1 drop of blood from 3 km away....lb's are 10 times more aware than that!!

Damn right it's a scam....did you pay it?

i love the seedy atmosphere in the gogos and the bars. international djs?`djs are pretentious assholes. anyone can spin a record, or throw in a cd, or even click on a mp3-file. the louder music the better. the girls doesnt have any intersting to say anyway, and conversation in brothels are overrated.
i dont want the gogos or bars to be too farangized. i can play by their rules, thats why i travel to thailand to escape from western routines. wouldnt be much fun or excitement if i came into a club that was paved with gold.
