Mr. Bear, I have great respect for your views, but really now. You're dead wrong here and way out on a limb.

If you're going to go around making definitive claims like this, you owe it to yourself to be better informed. Maybe the King didn't call a press conference and make the statement personally, but there's absolutely no doubt that others did make it with his permission (and maybe, dare we think, even encouragement).

According to CNN he has said that the cival servants are to take their orders from the army but that is still completly differant then coming out and endorsing their stand. Its called politics.

Using that kind of logic, I think you're fully qulified to be George Bush's next press spokesman. Surely you don't honestly believe the distinction you're drawing amounts to a hill of beans, do you? It's the classic example of what they taught us in law school was 'a distinct without a difference.'

The King actually just appointed Sonthi as the leader of The Council for Democratic Reform - in what was seen as confirmation that the council had the situation under control.
Sonthi is actually a good one, with a high reputation through all the parties and ranks - and obviously also backed by the very top!
You could call it undemocratic, I'd say it was just excellent!!!

PS:... and by the way I've heard that the bars in Pattaya were open all night yesterday.... any confirmation on that? It would be a really nice move of this new government if the first thing on their agenda would be to skip those bloody closing hours!

I would guess it would, the cops are staying indoors and soldiers are taking over most of their duties - especially traffic control.

I doubt the soldiers will be doing the 3am Nana scatter. Maybe I'll check out the parade tonight.

I haven't heard anyone calling the baht to go into a free fall, but in a sign of economic weakness Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs have cut 1.5% and 2% off their estimate for 2007 GDP growth in Thailand, a significant drop since most analysts expected only 3-5% growth total. We'll have to see how it all plays out, but if growth slows in Thailand you will see it hit the baht. I think the baht has settled for now since there hasn't been any new "news", but it hasn't recovered from its drop either.

Coup interrupts filming of Cage movie Thu Sep 21, 5:03 PM ET

Thailand's military coup this week interrupted filming of Nicolas Cage's new movie, a gangster thriller being shot in Bangkok, a news report said Thursday.

The Chinese news Web site Sina.com said Cage had prepared a private jet to leave the country on short notice.

Hong Kong-born twin brothers Danny and Oxide Pang are remaking their 1999 film, "Bangkok Dangerous," Sina.com said.

When news of the coup on Tuesday night reached the crew, Cage was sent back to his hotel. Crew members remained on the set to keep an eye on prop guns until Cage persuaded the producer to send everyone home, according to the report.

The directors couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Sina.com said filming was scheduled to be completed next month, but may be delayed by the coup, which saw the military overthrow of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Cage, 42, won a best-actor Oscar for 1995's "Leaving Las Vegas." His screen credits also include "Adaptation," "World Trade Center" and "Matchstick Men."
