On the phone the other day Jean-Claude Van Damme, the martial artist and action hero known in his heyday as the Muscles from Brussels, was sounding anxious and apologetic.
He had canceled a trip to New York, missing a host of engagements, to remain in Bangkok, where he recently finished shooting a movie. And he wanted to make clear that he had a very good reason.

"I adopted seven dogs here, and one of them had a heart attack," Van Damme said. "I'm sleeping with him every night at the clinic. If I leave him, he's going to go back into a coma. He's a very sensitive dog." The others - all strays, some disabled (he built "a little wheelchair" for one of them) - have been sent to his home in Belgium.

It wasn't a gay film JCVD was in. The name of the movie was Monaco Forever (Comedy in 1984) and was his (brief) first appearance where his role was as a gay karate man under the stage name Jeanne-Claude Vandam. He has been in 38 films ( two he was in were uncredited) and there are 2 more coming out this year. One note of interest. He has 9 dogs that he rescued from, Where else?, but, Thailand. Who'd a thunk it?
It was a bit of a shock to hear he was into ladyboys, but, hey, that's what we are here for too, yes?
