Is it legal in Thailand to physically restrain a customer and hit and kick him, stab him with a pen, and tear off his clothes if he argues against a fake bar bill?
In Chiang Rai a few weeks ago, the answer was yes!
It was a hostess bar, no nudity. The staff admitted to the Tourist Police that my only fault was not paying 2,600 baht for four "lady drinks" and one beer. I was trying to pay the pre-agreed amount of 660 baht.
It is my understanding that the police will file no charges against the screaming, battering bar girl who assaulted me while I was held down by the female staff. Nor will they do anything to the establishment that faked the bill.
Instead, I had to apologise for buying a poor bar girl four beers in about 20 minutes. Wow, could she guzzle them down! I am, after all, a foreigner and, as a tourist policewoman said, "usually at fault".
