I don't know how many there are  -  but as Kahuna has looked at the map I would not argue with him.

My experience the first few times there was that you walked off the plane to the first one and went through in about 10-20 minutes.

More recently it's been that you get directed by the official with the sign from a fairly empty one to one with lots of people waiting!

I had similar experience at the old airport once.  Some jobsworth saying you can't go into that empty immigration area in one terminal and directing us to the other one which was full of people!

I guess you haven't been to London's Heathrowairport..

I haven't had any problem with new airport yet..I hope they'll  fix it by Oct...

(69billy @ Aug. 28 2007,11:48) There are more then one immigration access points ..?? or are you tallking about the just the desks...
There are three areas with immigration desks, they are near each other. If you land at a regular gate other than D concourse (walking and a moving walkway), the three immigration areas are in a row (or your right or left depending on what pier you land in). If the first one is crowded, you might be able to walk to the second or third one and get a shorter line.

If you take a bus from your plane to the terminal, you go up the escalator and you are approx. at the middle immigration area. Same same if you land at the D gates. You can walk straight or right or left to find the shortest line.

On the map below, the orange areas are immigration areas for arriving passengers.

In April arrived late at night along with a load of Chinese Tourist who were having a documentation problem. Stood in line for a bit and then spotted a booth for diplomats with a few people in the line walked over to this line about 10 min. later out to get bags. Looked back at the old line and a guy I tried to get to come with me ( a newbie) still in line.
Between the first line finding the luggage carosel and walking it took about an hour to get out of the Airport the longest it has taken thus far.

If you arrive in the afternoon/early evening then i think you will have problems as many of the international flights all arrive at the same time.

early mornings seem to be the best bet.

I was there in June about midday and sailed through with no problem. On departure I was really impressed by the airport. Lots of nice food places and a very simple logical route from check in to departure. Maybe I was just born lucky. On the other hand I am so depressed when I leave that I'm probably not thinking straight.

According to latest reports the public taxi queue should be moving to the arrivals level Oct. 1, 2007. For those arriving around this time, please check for the signs for the public taxi. We shall see if it happens since they were making plans for this in June.

                      Suvarnabhumi switches transport policy
                      Monday, September 10, 2007

All public transportation including buses can now pick up and drop off passengers in front of the terminal.

Changes to Suvarnabhumi Airport 's transport system to make the airport more user friendly have been discussed for over four months, and have now been finalised. Effective 1 October, the new system will allow all public transport including BMTA busses to serve passengers in front of the terminal halls, while the public transport centre will only be used buses queued for departure.

                      Details of the changes are:

Group tour busses and the Airport Express will drop off passengers at the inner kerbside on the fourth level, adjacent to the departure hall, and pick up passengers at the inner kerbside on the first level, a space currently allocated to taxis.

Taxis and limousines will drop off passengers at the outer kerbside on the fourth level and pick up passengers at the inner kerbside on the second level, adjacent to the arrivals hall. This means taxis move up a level for pick up.

BMTA buses, vans and air crew shuttle buses will drop off passengers at the outer kerbside on the fourth level and pick up at the outer kerbside on the first level.

Rented vehicles can be picked up and dropped off as before at the inner kerbside on the second level.
The intra-Suvarnabhumi shuttle bus passengers will pick up and drop off passengers at the inner kerbside on the first, second, and fourth levels.

I read somewhere there is supposed to be some sort of rail link. Did I dream it or has it not been built yet?

Do not arrive late night not enough staff and if a couple of flights arrive at same time you are fucked. My first two flights into new airport were in the middle of day no problem in and out quick. In April arrived after midnight also a plane load of chinese with visa problems line were not moving.

The rail line is reported to be behind schedule (but no one will say how much behind schedule). My guess is that it will be around 1 year late, but probably not as late as the Skytrain was in opening!

Stories abound on the corruption surrounding the rail link... There are still people working on the site but I wonder if that will ever be open.
