(Chinaman @ Jul. 20 2010,20:47) Looking at this from a different angle. If that guy had been a friend or acquaintance of yours, what would you have recommended him to do?
Hindsight is 20/20, so this really isn't possible, but it would have been good for him to be known in Thailand under a different identity than his own. So they guy who did the crime that they are searching for would not really be him.

Regardless, this guys a nut, and is not thinking clearly. It was irrational to do this crime, and it was irrational to confess to it.

(Snick @ Jul. 20 2010,07:48) Bus to Udon Thani/Nongkai, Pay someone to get you across the Mekong into Laos. Make your way to US Embassy in Vientiane, say you lost your passport. Need a replacement, Fly from Laos to Kuala Lumper, then fly anywhere.
I like Snicks answer best, Hey buddy, if i find myself killing someone the next time im there can i call you for advice ?

..nah, the US embassy isn't going to let someone walk in saying they lost their passport without asking them a lot of questions that you better have the right answers to & then checking them out, i.e. what airlines/boat did u arrv on & at what destination, where were u staying before u arrv'd here, how long have u been at your oringinal destination & how did u arrv here.. no i think going to the embassy saying u lost ur passport when ur on the run would be my last choice next to turning myself in, there are too many ways they could find holes in your story & then you would be in a another bad situation u couldn't get out of..

..of course the fact he turned himself in & confessed to killing the woman brings some closure to the victim's family & relief to the workings girls in Phuket who feared they might be next..
.. I'm not young enough to know everything, and not old enough to have done everything..

Turn himself in to the Thai police?

Flee the country and turn himself in to a US embassy outside of Thailand?
                Interesting question.

Some years ago, I may have answered differently.
But now, I've learned to just cross out some people from my life.

That's what I would do, I wouldn't like to have a "love crime" murderer in my acquaintances.

Killing someone because of "losing control" ranks lowest in my eyes.

If the person wasn't a close friend or relative I would either blackmail him or get the police reward.
If it was someone close, I would simply do nothing.

To answer the question of what would I do if I really were in the same situation?
(I once began writing a book with that starting situation, so here it goes)

1- Body disposal and disposal of anything the victim owned is of paramount importance.
The guy made a big mistake.

There are several excellent ways to dispose of a body.

The one I like most is lesting it with stones and throwing it into the sea... deep.
In a few days, most of the flesh will already have been been eaten by crabs and some months later, the bones will have been dispersed. A year or so later, the bones can be dust already, depending on wether there's much underwater movement.
Also, if you do your homework, you are well shielded from view while disposing of the body that way, and it is nearly guaranteed that nobody will find it.

Other methods all have the risk of either being seen disposing of the body, risk of body being found or leaving an obvious trail (why did you buy 100 liters of concentrated sulfuric acid sir??).

If one has much time, the body can also be cut into pieces and then minced/mushed. Buying such machinery would probably not raise too much eyebrows, and once it's done, the "product" can be easily disposed of, few by few.
Of course, one should not be in a hurry, and it is quite messy.

Then there's the good old method of burying it, but make sure it's buried deep, that it's not buried on your property, that nobody sees you and that nobody will need to dig a hole at the same place!

2- Second: clean the crime scene and your body and clothes

best thing is to get rid of everything you wear, including that nice rolex and the gold ring, unless you got some strong bleach at hand, but anyway, I would hide these things away into a safe place for some time even after cleaning.
Best thing for the clothes is to burn them.

the crime scene: blood did probably flow if it was an "uncontrolled" act, so the blood needs to be removed or made inaccessible to police.
If the ground is wood, bad luck, blood goes into the least spaces. start with bleaching, but the floor needs to go out as well as everything underneath that is not liquid-tight (or watertight).
Maybe easier to burn the whole place if you are in a hurry. Bleach first, then burn the blood-stained places first.

Well, if you did #1 and #2 correctly, they will already have a very hard time to nail you.

But everything might not be as easy if you don't have time to plan!

                  3- on the run
ok, let's suppose you didn't have time to properly do #1 and #2 above and are in real deep shit: the police know who you are and you can suppose all border points are being checked.

                  - grab all money and anything lightweight you can sell easily (rolex, gold, gems, etc)
                  - switch off your mobile and take out the battery and SIM. this is just to sell or exchange the phone for another one, get a new SIM at 7-11, use it seldom and never to call people who are close to you
                  - use your credit card at the first 2 or 3 ATMs you see when leaving and pull everything you can. never use the card again
                  - never ever login to your email account(s)

setup like that, you should be able to survive a couple of months without problems - just avoid the police.

                  4- getting a new identity

getting a new identity "the nice way" is difficult to do without prior knowledge.
there are a number of ways to get a passport that will show as genuine, even in the books of the issuing country, but you need to be connected already.
usually the passport belongs to another really existing person who doesn't need it anymore.
they aren't even particularly expensive, 2000 EUR and you are set, there are even EU passports available.

so, if you are lucky and know someone like me, you could just pay to get that new passport, and be able to travel on it.

you might even be able to discover providers by internet, but 90% of them are bogus...

now... if you're not lucky and need a new identity, you will have to decide at this point if you are one of the real bad guys or not.

--> get a guy of the same age, height and general looks as you, drug him, do whatever is necessary to get access to his stuff and then dispose of him. repeat #1 and #2 as necessary.
congratulations, you just got yourself a new identity.
I wouldn't push my luck too far by using that guy's return airplane ticket and hoping to avoid detection at thai immigration!
this new identity will not last as long as a '"nice" one, but it may be good for a month or even more.

ok, you've got money and a passport.

now you've got to travel to a country where it is realtively easy to get a new identity with a forged birth certificate.

this is easier than most would think.
I heard it is possible in the US, in France, and other countries.

but first you've got to leave Thailand, right?

                  4- leaving Thailand
                  this shouldn't be too difficult.
I would try the terrestrial borders first. Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar.
Buy a Camera and pose as a bird photographer while you observe the patrols and ask locals how the border is patrolled.
Another possibility would be to try your luck with a boat at night, starting from some place near a border. a small inflatable dinghy would probably not be picked up by maritime radar.
don a wetsuit and diving equipment incase it gets hot !!

once you are out of reach, you can plan your next steps for building a new identity.

that sounds like a risky statement even if you have never been involved in such dealings before

thanks for sharing - sounds like a lot of work and quite complicated, so I just scratched "killing someone" off my to-do-list ...

                      I think that's a sound decision!

You've got to take most of the above as "thriller material", although I did some serious research on the passports and birth certificates.

If half of the guys story is true it sounds like he was a few floors from the penthouse. Unless you know what you are doing running isn't an option for most people, it also helps to have a lot of cash and who has that in this day and age. Most people live pay check to pay check.
