I travel to Asia (Japan/China/Thailand) approximately 8 times a year. I always travel on the cheapest fare that will reward me 100% status miles towards being in the top tier FF level. This top tier allows me lounge privileges, frequent upgrade certificates, pre-boarding, front of the line, no excess baggage charges and all of the other first class tidbits including upgrades to first class when they are oversold in economy.

To secure this status you need 100,000 miles every year. I have managed to achieve this amount for the past 5 years traveling while traveling on the cheapest available fares. It is really worth it because when the airline fucks up (which they do frequently on Asian routes out of Canada) they go overboard trying to compensate. For example, last year I purchased a seat sale ticket to Tokyo for $680.00 return. This is a real damn bargain!!! With this fare I was eligible to use a certificate to upgrade to first class, which I did. I had a terrific pod seat in first class that converted into a private 180 degree bed with all of the first class amenities. It was terrific especially when you consider the fare price. One hour out of Toronto the entertainment system went down and remained down for hours. I didn't give a rat's ass since I was reading, drinking, experiencing the pleasures of first class and knew I would soon be sleeping for the next 10 hours. Nonetheless the flight attendants passed out these forms to apply for compensation for the faulty entertainment system. I filled in the forms and was told that I would receive $350.00 credit due to the fact the entertainment system didn't work. Hmmmm. I did the math. My ticket was $680.00. I was upgraded to a $4,000. seat. Then they gave me a credit for $350.00. Wow! So I ended up flying from Toronto to Tokyo in first class for $330.00 RETURN!!! All because their silly entertainment system was down.

Other things have happened over the years that were not all that dissimilar to example cited above. It is mind-boggling. No wonder the airline industry suffers.

All this to say I concur with the notion to remain loyal to one airline entity even if you pay a bit more for your trip on occasion. You will reap the benefits eventually. I certainly have.

Nice one. Had the exact same problem on Air Canada, Toronto to Hong Kong - exclusive...oops, sorry I mean executive class with the vid system going balls up during the flight. All I got was a 10% discount on the next purchased with a time limit of one month.

Which airline do you use Steff?

type airline consolidators, you should be able to get a ticket for 1200 or less. I just made my reservations from Virginia for a business ticket for $..3300, they are normally around $4500-5000. I had jsut come back from LOS in June and I paid $1179 for a coach ticket through consolidators. That ticket went through Dallas with American and Jal, so I am sure they are still around that price.

I was on EVA last year when the entertainment system went down for the flight.  Nobody was offered anything but an apology.  So much for being in the cattle car, I mean economy section. I would have accepted a free beer but on all those airlines, liquor is free!
          Thats another thing.....liquor.....

Every domestic carrier in the USA charges $5 for a beer and $6 for mixed drink.  What a heist.  Compare that to all international carriers and you get all the beer, wine and whiskey you want for free (even in economy)..

Asians don't have the ferocious  appetite for beer that I do and I usually get all the premium beers before I get the local ones.  They dont carry that many premiums so I usually end up wiping out their supply of the good ones over a 14 hour flight which amounts to about 13-15 beers.

            (gart4571 @ Jun. 19 2010,10:57) Kahuna:

What dates are you looking at for those prices? I have been trying to find good rates on EVA out of LAX or SFO anytime between July 15th and Sept 1st and the cheapest that I can find are around 1700.00 and that is using some of my airmiles.
Sorry, I can't remember the exact dates...But it was sometime for the middle of August for an EVA flight out of LAX...But SFO shouldn't be much different...

I've found that it's best to be flexible when buying a ticket...The best days to fly are mid-week...Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday...and the best time to purchase a ticket are also on those days...Seems they most all raise the prices at the end of the week and lower them again late Monday or Tuesday...It also has something to do with the airlines rolling back unused tickets into the mix which apparently they do on Wednesdays...

(JaiDee @ Jun. 17 2010,23:42) ...their frequent flyer card is now on American Express, which is accepted nowhere
That's rather ironic as i use amex all the time here in oz for my Malaysian airlines ff partner - widely accepted and usually no added fees where i shop.
I can hardly ever use it in Thailand.....most hotels will give you a WTF look, even the higher-end places. Car-rental places also.

3 weeks ago I needed to purchase a "meal-plan" from my daughter's college for her freshman year, plus first months dorm fee; 4200 dollars all told. Free 4200 miles on Delta, right? Wrong; the college only accepted Visa, so that was 4200 miles I missed out on.

I'd guess I was losing between 6 and 8 grand a year in free miles which I WOULD have gotten if my airline just stuck with Visa; because they switched to that fucking crappy AMEX gold card, as well as because their service and flight connections absolutely suck ass right now, I am leaving Delta for good; they suck really badly.

You have co-branded credit cards over there???

I have a mastercard/amex for the one account (can also get visa/amex combo) ... so in a case like that, i'd just use the mastercard/visa - no problems

                co- branded cards

If u mean Thailand. Thai has a branded Amex card.
I have it it gives some benefits (shopping resteraunt discounts) but the mile system is confusing.
Agoda Accepts it. Latestays does not.

There is another way incase you don't have the frequent flyer miles cards and this might be shocking to many people.

As you've often heard, many south/ south east asians are bargain shoppers for a lot of south/ south east asian flights. If you can find out a travel agency that caters mainly to flights in those areas, you'll find their fee's are in the $30 range per ticket compared to $100-300 per ticket of the other travel agencies. A lot of the time travel agencies are just trying to pay off their $7000 a month rent so they bill you extra for it.

For example I flew United to Hong Kong once for $830 economy which I got from a travel agency in Queens, NY where as the manhattan travel agencies were charging $1200+ for the exact same flight.

I'm not a cheap charlie but paying that much more is just stupid. I'd rather get a few more LT's for it.

Maybe I sound insensitive but its not the case at all. I do care!  But if I had to live my whole life based on how everyone might be sensitive to me.. I would not be living my life as I want it. So you can accept me and my flaws as I am or you can't.

Have been checking EVA from LAX to BKK for Nov. and the Economy Delux is running 1800dollars and the economy is 1300dollars that is at there on site. I have also checked out a few of the ticket sites and prices running as high as over 2000dollars on JAL.

Cheao-o-air has tickets as low as 900dollars but that is before taxes and fees Thai jumped up to 1300dollars for economy after taxes and fees.

I think until the airlines start adding more planes to the mix high fares will be here for a while.

Lets keep this thread open if anyone finds a legitmate fare around 1000dollars from LAX to BKK post here.

If the trend continues I will be flying economy instead of economy delux.

(also Cathay Pacific has flights from SFO on the same dates for $1200, less for September Malaysia Air has some for similiar price/time from LAX.)

This took a few minutes so I'm sure there may be others around.
