Might be able to knock off an extra $100-200 if you travel on another day then Friday. But I agree with you texasmac & BS - thoses prices are steep.
Typical - low season in SE Asia but high season for N. American air travellers. Try waiting a week or two and see if the prices drop. That's what I did last year and got mine for about $500 less. About the same dates as well but I bought my tickets 3 weeks before setting off. It's a gamble."Even ladyboys are size queens" - Anonymous

If you guys are travelling outta North America you have to check out United. From my base there are $970. (return) fares in the early fall and $1,157. return fares into the deeper fall. Summer is a bum fuck all round for all the airlines but United seems to be very, very aggressive. For any of you that give a hoot, United is part of the Star Alliance team.

I am headed to LOS in early August and the cheapest I can find from California is $1500. I have been checking every day for weeks. If you notice, the fares start to drop on August 15 and beyond. You can save a few bucks if you travel after August 15.
It is high season for airfares and they can command a price like that.
I have been traveling this route for 10 years and it really has not changed. Same thing at Christmas and Easter time. If you look now at those dates, fares are already high due to high season.
I have resigned to these fares as they are cyclical. I can only travel at certain times and unfortunately, they are usually at the high season times. If I travel in an off month like October or February, I can get well under $1000 round trip to BKK. Even as low as $750.
I am like you MAC, I will still pay it but I would like to save a few bucks if I could.

I am not sure how you are searching for tickets, but try www.sidestep.com.
That site has proven to be the best for finding the cheapest flights.
Fares change by the hour so I would check all the time.
The best fares can usually be found between every Tuesday from 12:00 pm EST through Friday morning each week.
Airlines always post their new competitive fares on Tuesday and then other airlines start matching them. It can change each time you log in.

No offense, but looking at sidestep.com, it appears to be a site that just combines Expedia and Travelocity, which IMO are seldom the least expensive places to find flights. Of the online sites, Orbitz has usually shown much better rates, though I've not used any of them for a few years. When I booked flights online for Jamaica, Dom Rep or Costa Rica, Orbitz beat the other two easily most every time.
In my experience, when booking for Thailand, the cheapest prices have come from either going directly to the airline of choice, or using a travel agent that specializes in discount air fares. I'm from Oregon, so I used one in Portland. No matter what prices Expedia, Travelocity or Orbitz showed, for SE Asia they'd always beat them by a good amount.“When a nation's young men are conservative, its funeral bell is already rung.”

First of if you check kayak.com the cost will be $1838.00, if you play around with the dates you may reduce that some.
Second, here in Pattaya it's a buyer's market for all hotels. So the money you save on the hotels can go towards the higher ticket price.
Third, summer in North America is high season, so with the reduced airline capacity, tickets have to go higher than last year.
Good luck guy...
