my understanding of this limp response by the military is that many in the police and military come from the same social strata that the Reds represent. Also, there is a careful dance underway to be the side that has shows less violence. The perceived violent side will be the loser in public opinion or something like that. I guess it's a Buddhist thing.

Yes and Yes, but its a Thai thing not a Buddhist thing. Burma and Cambodia are both Buddhist and no one can accuse them of being non-violent.

I escaped the Land of Shambles!  There were a few troops on the way to the airport, but I'm sure they would move smartly aside if asked nicely by some red shirts.

Excuse me, but what was the purpose in declaring a State of Emergency ... if nobody is prepared to enforce it?  Presumably the powers-that-used-to-be are hoping everyone goes home tonight for Songkran

I'm with Socrates on this one - govt and/or country going down the plughole, with the police and army making gurgling sounds as it does so

Songkran has been canceled, at least all officially organized events in Bangkok (but Khao Sarn does NOT count as an organized event...seriously).

Maybe someone should change their nic to TITChang

RedShirt TV is back on air. On the proviso that they stop saying naughty things about the Govt.

Reds now "angry" at gov for not keeping their word. Seems that Thaksin's attempt to stir the nest on PTV tonight was, ahhh... "interrupted". Oops!

I see. It's nice that the Thais value non violence so highly.

Wandered up to Tesco Lotus yesterday...Directly across from the entrance on Pattaya Nua they were holding a Huge Rally...Must have been 10 maybe 15 Red Shirts clapping and yelling at some sort of broadcast on the TV...After my 30 minute shopping spree, when I returned they were all sleeping...

I think there were more food carts than Red Shirts...And 1 cop...

On my way back to my Apt I passed a pickup truck loaded with maybe 5 or 6 Red Shirts stopped at a light...They all smiled at me when I passed by...I said "Hi."

Pretty tame here in Pattaya at the moment...

Guess the best advice for folks living in BKK or visiting is to avoid wearing red and yellow clothes

Violence has broken out, 5 dead so far including a Japanese Reuters reporter. Check Nation web site for live updates.

Apparently split in the Red Shirt leadership. One calling for truce and another two want to continue fighting.

18 dead, four soldiers and fourteen civilians. 825 injured.

                            A sad day in Thailand.

Very sad indeed & a disaster for tourism until order returns.

I pray this isn't the start of worse civil unrest where the rioters start burning cars & buses & looting businesses.

Then no one is safe. So much for the idea that Thais abhor violence.

The next 24 hours are vital. The government must take decisive action.

                              Otherwise.................
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

yah , my Thai friend Ben drove me to the airport where they have Army Checkpoints all over the place..im glad im out today as i fear it could turn very nasty , one supposes that some blood letting was inevitable.

Helicopters are swarming over parts of Bkk. At least the bars are open. Songkran may be celebrated with a lower tone this year in BKK .

Around every other time i fly to this place there is one drama or another.
