    • This Monday and Tuesday were just declared "special holidays" in Bangkok. Not sure exactly what's affected.

      • very interesting to see the map Azza, good posting,i guess though if you look at demographic equations here as anywhere, then the graph makes sense and would read as you would expect.
high gdp concentartions in bkk and surrounding provinces...where the industry and bulk working mass are, including financial industry.
next highest are the regions it could be argued are involved in tourist related income turnover, also foreign investment .foreign property investment and associated financial input.
the fact that the bulk who do the hardest most manual work often are in the areas with lowest gdp is not exclusive to thailand.
i have no doubt that if available then the graphs would probably read very similar if applied to the uk.and australia.
in the uk we have great inequality in wealth and gaps are getting bigger more extreme dont think that its just thailand that has the fraud and corruption truth be known most of that shit is done here the difference here is that we pay huge amounts of tax personally to float it all!this is true the world over.
if anyone cares to look ahead many years it could be argued that this is a trend which will continue...:ie: a small% generate and or own a large% of the wealth. now if allowed to continue exponentially it will at somepoint result in a great minority with all finance and control, all others will have no authority or resources.think this is fantasy? look through history, allready civilisations now long gone have been through these long drawn out processes.the unfortunate outcome sad to say is often war, civil war, invasion by another or just constant anarchy and dsyfunctional society.
storming the Bastille is often the outcome.
unfortunate as it is,humans need conflict to keep society in balance.to attempt redress to inequality and authoritarian regime.

        • Here's Per Capita Income Per State.

The top states have about double the per capita income of the poorest ones.  But then housing costs are much lower in Mississippi than Conneticut.

No where near the disparity between Issan and Bangkok.

            • The point that Pigdogg makes about the living costs between the various US states apply to LOS as well. It only costs a fraction of what the living costs in Bangkok are to live in Isaan.

                  • It just got even worse........................

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- A leader of the anti-government Red Shirts has died after being wounded by a sniper's bullet during protests last week, hospital officials confirmed Monday.

Maj. Gen. Khattiya Sawasdipol was a renegade general better known as Seh Daeng, which means Red Commander.

Tensions in Bangkok ramped up when Maj. Gen. Khattiya Sawasdipol was shot and wounded by a sniper's bullet Thursday, leaving him hospitalized in critical condition.

His death came after four days of clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces killed 35 people -- with 11 of those deaths occurring in sporadic fighting throughout Sunday and overnight.

The Erawan Emergency Center also announced Monday that the fatalities include a soldier, the first such death since fighting broke out.

                       1.  I dont know the politics of the general that was assasinated but the guy that did it should be arrested for murder, he didn't deserve to be taken out that way!
                       2.  I wonder if they would pay an American 2000 (baht) a day to wear a red shirt & do they furnish the heavy heat to defend urself from those snipers!
                       3.  The redshirts wont leave peacefully now & i expect if the violence gets worse they'll set the city ablaze before the military can take control of the area the redshirts control now..
.. I'm not young enough to know everything, and not old enough to have done everything..

                      • I don't think anyone expected Seh Daeng to pull through.

I'm obviously far from informed, but does anyone else suspect that an assault on the encampment could be coming on Monday night and Tuesday? Govt. has announced that protesters can leave until Monday afternoon; school cancelled Monday and Tuesday; perhaps I'm reading too much into it.

                        • BANGKOK (AFP) -- Thai soldiers on Monday sealed off part of the Bangkok tourist district of Sukhumvit Road, but there was no sign of clashes in the area as troops battled anti-government protesters elsewhere in the capital.

Razor wire and trucks blocked the road near the Nana nightlife zone popular with foreign travellers. About 100 soldiers carrying riot shields stood in formation, blocking the road in one direction.

                            His Politics?
Seh Daeng was the one ordered the baricade outside the hospital reinstalled after the fiasco of the said hospital invasion by the red shirts. (It was removed for about an hour in a fit of guilty concscience and then reinstalled although one lane was left open for EMS purposes.)

Seh Deang hated roundly the Democrats and PAD (yellowshirts) and was very much a part of the Thaksin inner circle.

Seh Daeng was a prime reason that after the more moderate reds (Veera) accepted the "Roadmap to Peace" the red hawks reneged on the deal that if Suthep delivered himself the the police they would vacate by the 15th May.

Seh Daeng was not interested in a compromise or democracy in my humble opinion, only in seeing Thaksin reinstated, or failing that receiving a pardon and a right to return to LOS a free man.

I my country and I assume yours, when a Major General crosses the floor to become a leader of a rebellion he is breaking his vows to uphold and protect the constitution. The words treason spring to mind.
                            Was he summarily executed?

I guess so. Is it sad?

                            Up to you.

                            • The Govenrment has given a deadline for the redshirts to leave the rally site...Of course, the Gov has no idea what it will do if the redshirts don't leave...It's a mystery...

Protesters have until 3pm to leave the Rajprasong rally site, Deputy government spokesman Panithan Wattanayakorn said Monday.

After 3pm, Center for Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES) will consider later what to do after the deadline.
