Over the past two years or so traveling to Thailand, I got the impression that I had "missed the boat" some what. Everybody I meet here in UK, "I used to go Thailand" but now it seems "Vietnam" is number one destination .
Could this be the final nail in the coffin for "mass" Tourism in Thailand, most of the people I talk to say Vietnam is more friendly & as cheap as Thailand used to be !

So wots the Forums thought on this ?

Hotels in rural Bumfuck are rare, however there are numerous Tourist Cabins with shared accommodations for those who really enjoy roughing it. If staying (or trapped) in downtown Bumfuck, there are many hotels, almost all with vacancies, some with private baths.

However be advised that these hotels are also places of business for catering to the career girl, so ear plugs are advised. For the more adventurous, economy hostels (flop houses) are available; however it is unlikely that your desk clerk will have access to a safe for your valuables.

Also, there are no ATMs in rural Bumfuck. ATMs may be found in downtown Bumfuck, although there are plenty of places where one may cash checks or sell plasma if one is in need of some fast cash.

Those travelers who have difficulty in sharing "facilities" and feel that they may one day find themselves in Bumfuck are advised to pack and carry the following kit in their car:
Toilet paper
Toilet seat cover
Antiseptic wipes/ bottle of brown Lysol

Vietnam ain't what it was...
I am living in LOS and commuting regularly to Vietnam and the place pisses me off, as it does most of the fellow expats I know who still live there. (I lived there for 2 years before moving to Bumfuck Thailand.)
The greed in Vietnam is getting worse, as are the scams. For the last three years April through June brings power cuts every second day from 0600 to as late as 2100 at night. Every second day... try living a normal life with that lot. (The cause? Good question. A state run monopoly that refuses to buy power from the new power stations that have been built as it is "too dear" so every one suffers. Note that in both LOS and VN I had or have 3 bed houses with pools and the LOS power bill is 30% of what it was in VN per month.)
Prices are no cheaper than LOS, with Hotels generally being more expensive.
EVERYONE is out to get thier hand in your pocket.
Honestly if it weren't for work you wouldn't see me there.
Thailand, viva la revolution and all is superior in all ways:

Lastly you cannot even walk in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City if you are a commie from the North) for the traffic, which takes to the sidewalks if its too busy on the street. Where else but Vietnam?

I went to Vietnam back in January and won't rush back anytime soon. In general I found the people not very welcoming and everyone was trying to make a buck out of us every step of the way. This happens sometimes to me in Thailand but occurred all the time in Vietnam. The rip-offs made it so it was often more expensive than Thailand (tours, hotels) though I found food to be a lot cheaper.

And to top it off, I didn't see one ladyboy. Being a totalitarian country, there are no go-go bars that are so plentiful in LOS. Apart from the historical aspects that one may enjoy I found no attraction to the place at all. BTW if you take a Thai LB with you on your trip be prepared to be stared at and even cop a little prejudice behaviour from the locals.

What annoys the hell out of me in Saigon is the horns, Giant honking horns 24/7. Bangkok never appears so quiet as after a trip to Saigon.
The beaches suck also.
And to chime in with the rest, everyone is trying to rip you off, traffic is a dangerous nightmare, a few skanky looking gogos (which might have been closed down), and no LB.

I would like to apology to Kahuna and anyone else I may have offended with my comments regarding the US citizen meetings in BKK. At the time of writing it I was ignorant and unaware it was being organized by the US Department of State. I mistakenly thought it was being organized by individuals and being advertised publicly and as such thought it to be a "stupid" idea. Also I wrote it after reading Spare Wheel's post which was similar. My intention was not to offend or appear cheeky. I am sorry.

I would also like to apologize to the state of Ohio for thinking "Bumfuck" was there.
