(krw60 @ Mar. 21 2009,13:54) I am strongly considering my first visit to Bangkok but have the following concern:
I am recovering from a badly broken leg and currently walk with a cane. While thumbing through a travel guide I read that many Thais are uncomfortable with disabled people, who are apparently considered bad luck. Supposedly the belief is that the disabled are being punished for transgressions in a previous life.
I am wondering if this is outdated or incorrect information and if anyone has observed people in my situation being avoided or otherwise treated differently.
I was stationed one year in Udon Thani and 9 months in DaNang S. Vietnam during the Vietnam War. While in Vietnam, I received a very severe injury to my lower right leg which left me with a fused ankle and the absence of almost all of the muscle in my lower right leg. I have a slight limp from the fused ankle and a very ugly lower leg.
I have been returning to Thailand every year since 1999 for 1 or 2 months and I receive nothing but respect from almost every Thai that I meet. Many older Thais, especially taxi drivers and others in the tourist industry have fond memories of American GIs being stationed all over Thailand during the Vietnam War. They also had many of their own Thai soldiers fighting along side of the Americans in Vietnam.
Just go out of your way to try to learn to speak some Thai and to show mutual respect to the Thais that you meet and you wil have no problems.

(TTChang @ Mar. 21 2009,19:02) krw, thanks for posting on this forum. A very good thread for discussion.
It is a subject that I was discussing with my regular girl this week. This is the LB who told me she wanted to look after me long time ... even if I was in a wheelchair. To which I replied (true) ... 'But you are going to have to find all the ATMs with ramps, not steps!'
But last week I turned over my ankle in Nana Soi 4. Therefore limping a lot. She said 'Why you go out Nana and let ladies laugh at you?' Maybe .. because she wants me to stay at my BKK home!
In LOS, age is no barrier to enjoyment (as it certainly is in the UK). And I've never seen disabled guys treated with anything less than respect either. Baht conquers all. Enjoy this fantasy world. Let us know when you are on your way.
So succintfully put uncle TT..
That and from our experiences, walking with a cane, is just not a 'disability' so as far as most Thai's concerned..
Just put on the pimp limp and get with it Mac!

(gart4571 @ Mar. 24 2009,20:51) krw60: If you are from USA, just tell the Thai's "Ta-han (sp?) - Vietnam". Just kidding, especially if you are a young man. However, I can, and do, tell them if they ask and I am truthful in telling them that.

Thanks for the info. I'm 48 and in reasonable shape, outside of the leg. I'm learning to speak basic Thai phrases just to show respect, as well as customs, body language, etc.
Regardless of politics and whether or not the USA should have been involved with Vietnam, I have the utmost respect for you and all veterans who served their country.

And the angels came to the city of the Sodomites...when the Sodomites beheld the young men, who were outstanding in beauty of appearance and who had been received into Lot€™s house, they set about to do violence and outrage to their youthful beauty....Therefore, God, indignant at their bold acts, struck them with blindness, so that they were unable to find the entrance into the house, and condemned the Sodomites to destruction of the whole population. My own belief is that there is hardly anyone whose sexual life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the world at large with surprise and horror. ~W.
