You seem to stuck in the past regarding the smog. It has cleared up in both Bangkok and Pattaya. If you remember in the 1980's LA had terrible smog too - probably as bad or worse than Thailand. If they take the proper actions the smog problem will eventually be mitigated. It sounds like you are making excuses for not visiting Thailand.

Nah. I have been searching for news about the Bangkok smog daily, but all smog news ended at January 31.Nobody writes whether it disappeared after that. That's why I'm asking IS THE BANGKOK SMOG STILL THERE? Don't want to smell that kind of air when I arrive for Songkran. I have seen seriously bad smog in L.A. and Taipei. Never going there again. It's not that I don't like smog. I really can't breathe in them. The soot and carbon dioxide and monoxide makes it seriously impossible to breathe.
I just found a website for Bangkok's daily smog index. Scroll downwards and see what the next 7 days smog index prediction is. Bookmark this page. Shows the AQI, wind (direction and speed), weather, and temperature predictions for the week. Interesting data. Conslusion: Thailand's smog is still bad.
Uh oh. Chiang Mai is number 5 worst smog in the world. Just punch in your city and see what your score is.
Pattaya - Chon Buri is 90 (yellow). Bangkok is 133 (orange). Surprisingly Los Angeles is 35 (green). Honolulu is 12 and where I live is 1. That's because the constant cooling trade winds blow the smog out into the ocean.
Here are the rankings of top 50 world cities. Bangkok is #17. Most of the cities are Asian. Surprised L.A. is not listed, but SF, Portland, and Seattle is. That means they are worse than L.A. Manila is 56 which surprises me. Beats Bangkok. Was filthy back in 1999. Everybody was wearing air filter masks or holding handkerchiefs to their faces. I guess it improved with the new city rail system. Check out China and its different cities. Some surprises. Beijing is no longer the worst like it was before the Olympics.Comment

I was in Udon Thani last year end of March and the air quality was brutal especially north in the areas around Nong Khai. The burning of undergrowth for agriculture in preparation for the growing season is everywhere they say Chang Mai is even worst with seasonal burning for the mushroom farming lack of wind in March & April and the mountains hold all the smog in the valleys where everyone lives !! best to visit northern Thailand after the rainy season which is May-September and before the seasonal burning in February!Comment

I remember about 25 years ago when Kuala Lumpur was supersaturated with smoke from the forest fires to clear the land in preparation for palm oil plantations. Smoke so bad fishermen couldn't find their way back to shore. That was serious trouble. Those guys probably couldn't afford radar navigators. Could see the smoke from satellite images. You have to wonder if there's a better way to clear forest lands of dead debris. Burning or mulching and composting. Burning is so much cheaper and easier. The forestry officials, cops, and government will always say to stop but look the other way. Just lie through their teeth that they are arresting pyromaniacs. Asian nations are so corrupt because they are too poor.
An added note: The trash keeps piling up in Ko Lan. So why not invite foreigners who specialize in large sized industrial incinerators. I think special heat-resistant bricks could be manufactured in Thailand, assembled by local stone masons, engineered by foreign specialists (maybe Germans
. Reward these guys with permanent resident visas since Thailand is going to need to build these rubbish burners all over the country. Here in Honolulu we have garbage to energy plants where almost all of the rubbish is incinerated into electricity. These engineers could build these, too. The national government is going to have to uncorrupt itself and allocate money for these projects. The national elections will be next Sunday. Already early voters are queuing up today. Good luck and no shooting and rioting, please. Sure hope a good government gets elected so all of the people can get out of poverty.
Oh yeah. A reminder. You cannot buy alcohol on election day. Stores and bars cannot sell you such. Don't know what will be served in Nana Plaza. So get out to the stores and buy up a decent stash to last you a week. The ban might be extended if there's rioting. Better watch what happens to the Baht. Will be good for tourists. Mo money fo yo honeys. Songkran is less than a month away. Not sure if alcohol may be banned again. Have fun. Lots of it. One day Thailand may ban Katoeys. Yes? Nyaaaaaaah!
