Better explanation in this news post today. Apparently it is for the King's coronation security. Doesn't explain why only Kao San Road is targeted.
Not trying to be negative. There are so many tourist traps and surprises to watch out for. it's all in the newspapers. I read them everyday and LYK when you are too busy to keep up or don't read them before you go there. I'll bet you there's a lot of backpackers who paid for plane and hotel reservations only to be ambushed by these sneak government boogie man rules.
In addition, why wait until so late to announce no alcohol sales in bars as well as no Songkran in the Kao San area. They knew the King's coronation was coming. Why not announce it a year in advance so tourists can plan ahead?
