    From The Big Chilli magazine...

There were 2 gun shootings last week in Soi Cowby.

Fortunately, in the first case, a machete-wielding man caught the shooter.

In the second case, someone merely shot his load in a short time room.

Guns in Soi Cowboy - Quiet, Buddhist Thailand!
That's a catchy headline! But it's probably not fair to suggest that anything that happens in a tourist trap of second rate brothels is a reflection of Thailand and it's Buddhist culture.

Having said that, I've never felt that Buddhism and the true spirit of its' meaning have ever really captured the hearts and minds of most Thai people. Sure there is the odd respectful wai at a local wat. Thais will give up their seats to a member of the orange brigade. They do a period of 'schooling' at a monestary pretty much the same as most Western kids go on summer camp.

But (like most of us) we only really turn to our respective religous institutions during times of tragedy or celebration.

Britain is in the grip of a ferocious crimewave involving knives and guns at the moment and it's not confined to a few 'predictable' neighbourhoods either. Since embracing the concept of mass integration of foreigners we have seen a chilling and sharp rise in all kinds of crime in the UK.

The cops are powerless and the polititions are indifferent. Law abiding citizens are scared to walk the streets and are in constant fear of their own safety as well as that of their possesions and property.

          Give me Thailand anytime.

A catchy headline maybe but it proves that Thailand is not immune to gun crime either.

Another catchy quote. Statistics can show whatever you want. I live in a less than nice area of a major uk city, and apart from a few odd "attacks" on my car ( 4 times in 4 years and they didnt even get in and steal anything!), and some minor outside vandalism, I have hardly seen crime.

Yes guns are a problem but nowhere near as bad as other places.

Come on! most crimes that hit the headlines are sensationalist because they are rare. 60 million people in the UK to scared to leave their homes!!

And dont tforget the current spate of knife crime in London is linked to Gangs and young thugs. This will always happen. The Uk may have some faults, but it really aint as bad as you are making it.

(stogie bear @ May 18 2007,09:06) Britain is in the grip of a ferocious crimewave involving knives and guns at the moment and it's not confined to a few 'predictable' neighbourhoods either. Since embracing the concept of mass integration of foreigners we have seen a chilling and sharp rise in all kinds of crime in the UK.
A significant number of the illegal immigrants sent back by the UK authorities are either convicted criminals or are wanted for serious offences in their own countries.
That's the ones that are caught trying to get in!  Though I would say the success rate on catching them is now pretty good  -  especially compared to the past.

I wonder how many of the apparently legal ones have got in by covering up previous crimes.  Although in theory immigration should have information available warning about the worst cases  -  I suspect there are many occassions where the information has not been passed on or is missed.

I actually thought the machete-wielding patron was the more interesting part.

Ok, you can imagine someone hiding a gun. When was the last time you saw a guy with a machete?

Personally I find a ladyboy peeling a mango with a large knife scary enough

I find the idea of a ladyboy wielding a potato peeler scary enough!

As KL rightly suggests - there are good and bad parts of every country. My personal experience has proven (at least to me) that Thailand is a far far safer enviroment to live in but I guess it depends where you live!

The Isle of Wight is OK in parts but the drunks and druggies that infest the streets at any given time of the year are enough to make me want to leave.

Its a sign of the times in every city in every country on earth, crime is up and on the increase everywhere, its an unfortunate state that we fnd ourselves. In saying that i dont know of a city where i feel safer than in Bangkok.I have been visiting los for the past 15 years and i have never had crime commited against me,I know of people who have had the usual pickpocket brigade spoil their holiday but all in all i dont think there is anything to worry about re crime rising in Bkk.As a matter of fact i would prefer to be walking the streets of Bkk in the early dark hours of the morning rather than any other city.
I recently started a new job based in Dubai and was shocked when on my first social night out there i discovered a gunroom on entry to a nightclub, same as a clockroom for coats,it was not compulsery to leave your gun there but it made me think. Also on a recent short stopover in Johannesburg i was amazed at the number of people freely carring side arms and making sure the were visable.
In a recent survey in the Bkk post it was pointed out that 70% of gun crime commited in Pattaya was by non Thai nationals, usually eastern europeans. In my opinion, and i visit up to 7-8 major cities each month i would still rate Bkk as one of the safest.

                          LINK to the story...

English Hospitals treat 13 knifings a day... The legal age for buying a knife is soon to rise from 16 to 18... The bulk of these happen at the weekend and most victims are male, according to the NHS health and social call Information Centre's database. From 1997 to 2005, admissions following an assault involving a sharp object rose by 30% to 4,891.
Hey, KL... Still think I'm being sensational? Still think we live in England's pastures green and pleasant land? You've got your head in the sand, mate. The English way of life is not under threat anymore... It's on it's last legs already.

The plain fact is that England is a much more dangerous country for law abiding people to live in than it was even 5 years ago.

I suspect that your comment is tounge in cheek. The obvious answer to me is that the rise in violent crime is directly connected with the unregulated import of undocumented and criminal foreigners that are allowed to come into the UK.

As the police have their hands bound by the march of politically correct imbeciles this has left a vacuum for criminals to do whatever they want undeterred by the prospect of punishment.

While foreigners are encouraged to rape, shoot, stab, murder and steal at will there is nothing left for normal law abiding folks to stay for. While these weirdos have their cult weddings and child rape circles and perverted indoctrinations forced upon everyone then you can't blame peace loving normal people for fleeing to Spain or other relatively peaceful countries.
