If the guy you buy from is good (most aren't), you can ask them to install a, b, c, for you, and you can specify 'licensed' or 'not licensed' (i.e., pirated).
I buy everything from Adtech on the 2nd floor of Puntip now, from Khun Thaksin. He provides the best service imagineable. If he doesn't have it in his shop, he just goes and buys it nearby and charges you near nothing for doing so.
For example, I bought a PC and said, 'Please install licensed Vista, and unlicensed MS Office Pro and Adobe Creative Suite 3'. I come back and everything is working. Because his staff do this 12 hours per day, they know everything that can go wrong, so you avoid all the headaches that you might encounter if you do it yourself.
For laptops, I don't think Thailand is cheaper, however, the variety, in a very small area, is good. I personally think Fortune Tower is a bit better for laptops, for variety, but Puntip is better all round (for desktops, components, s/w, ...).
If you buy software at Panthip (and we all do), run a virus scanner on the CD before installing anything.
In the last few months I have noticed a lot of 'keygen' programs are infected with Trojans.
If the disk is infected, best to throw it away and not risk it.
Great advice regarding getting 1 gig of ram, very important. However, you've got to have the speed to go with the memory, so get the most ghz you can, best if the number is over 2 ghz. Also, as has been mentioned, licensed os very critical because you will be able to get the updates and i tried pirated on my laptop and it eventually began to break down. MS office is usually ok if pirated and for ancillary software, you can always check cnet.com.
Processor speed is required for highly intensive applications like Adobe Photoshop CS3, games, etc. If all a person is going to do is internet, and word processing a lower spec CPU is sufficient and significantly less expensive.
RAM can make a bigger difference than the CPU speed. This allows the program to avoid "swapping" out to the hard drive when the physical RAM is used up - which significantly slows down an application.
The most important thing to do is decide what you want to use the computer before purchasing it. It isn't necessary to buy overspec and spend extra money for unused capability.
For users who have pirated Windows software (both the operating system and Office), you can find solutions to these without having to buy the original software. Just run a search with terms "Windows crack" or "Office crack" - however be careful as some of these sites are dangerous. There is one reliable site that provides the workaround for restarting the MS updates.
I don't bother to buy the latest fastest processor - especially in a laptop.
Tomorrow it will be the second fastest and it's price will have dropped by 20-25%.
What I save on getting the next processor down I spend on extra memory and the biggest capacity hard disc that they supply.
Having said that I'm not into games and I don't use Photoshop
