this trip i found time to read a book called "welcome to hell" by colin martin. he was locked up for many years for accidental murder. the story of the thai justice system is unbelievable. i always knew corruption was rife there, but the justice system is non existent to our way of thinking. the guy's lawyer was afraid to say anything in his defense for fear of insulting or upsetting the judge. bottom line though was, he and anyone else can pay their way out. he didn't because he expected to be acquitted at a fair trial. no such thing exists.this guy went to court many times for years to find no judge or no prosecutor....it's a joke. so if you ever find yourself in an awkward situation.....PAY UP. it's the only defence you will ever have.

what are you wittering on about?

    It's a fine institution:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3572395.stm

don't know if you know the story behind this, but he was 'allegedly' seen to shoot a Police officer in the head at point blank after someone trod on someone elses foot in a night club, he 'disappeared' for six months only to turn himself in just in time to be aquitted.

some people say his father is a bit corrupt, but I don't believe a word of it myself, oh, nearly forgot, this chap has a brother who is a nice fellow as well, they were famous (or is that infamous?) in BKK a few years back.

was just showing how it works the other way round

the story you outlined in your post is quite a common tale,

he and anyone else can pay their way out. he didn't because he expected to be acquitted at a fair trial.
I think you need to have pleaded guilty at the time to be able to buy off part of your sentence after serving a minimum period in jail, if you get had up for anything in Thailand get the best (read 'influential') you (and your family and friends) can afford. Things are totally different to what we expect in the West.

There's a hundred stories (and then some) of falangs being done for shit that wasn't their fault. Not so long back we got the blame for everything, the Thai's views were: If falang stay home, not come Thailand then this not happen.

Can kinda see their point, if you're sat at home in London with your feet up watching TV then the drunk kid on the bike wouldn't have ran in to the back of your pick-up on Sukhumvit Rd and killed himself, but it is kinda argument weak too.

The penal system in Thailand is as close to perfect you can get.

If the West adopted similar types of prisons and a similar system of justice I'd be quite happy to live in the UK again.
