    I lost my virginity...

Seriously...this last trip was the first time I actually lost something other than an umbrella and I don't know if a sticky-fingered girl took it or the local laundry ate it...
it was a t-shirt...I think it costs about 100 bht at sapanpoot (sp) river market..but I did rather like it...Odds are on the laundry lady...and I will have words with her
    when I return...

My class ring was stolen during my first trip to Korea in 1977. Since then I have been pretty lucky and have not had any items (that I know of) stolen. In addition to Korea I have been to 17 other countries. I have not yet had the fortune of reaching Thailand yet.

A couple of things that I do while in public are as follows:

WATCHES: I wear it on my arm that is towards the inside of the vehicle I am riding or driving in to prevent it from being either yanked off or cut off at a stop while the arm is outside the vehicle.

RINGS: I loop a flesh color rubber band through my SF ring, run it under my middle finger and loop it on the finger on the other side of the middle finger. Its not uncomfortable, barely noticeable, and will definitely let one know if it is sliding off (either intentionally or by accident).

Back in 2003 I was in a hurry and left my Kodak digital camera in the taxicab - first thing I ever lost in LOS. Never got that back, as I forgot to note the number of the taxi.

In 2004 I left an umbrella in the Alcazar theatre never got that back either, but they are pretty cheap in LOS, so mai pen rai!

I have never had anything stolen in LOS, but during my first visit to Bali in 1993 I had my wallet stolen. The guy was extremely slick. He was one of the watch sellers who would pester you with a big collection of watches on a board. I told him not interested, but he kept walking with me, unzipped my fanny pack (I have since stopped using those in favour of the neck wallet tucked under the shirt), and took my wallet. I did not feel a thing!

Some helpful advice that has been mentioned in other posts - if at all possible do not wear valuable jewelery and watches - leave those at home and wear a cheap watch. Do not dress up too upscale (designer clothes), always put away your valuables before you have horizontal bedroom activities, only take out a specific amount of Baht for the night's actions - not extra, keep a copy of your passport with you and secure your passport in a safe place. Do not accept drinks from stranger, do not accept any touts offers of low cost tours with tuk tuk or taxi. I am sure the board members will have more advice.

So, just be sensible, and keep your wits about you and you should be fine! Have fun!

             Almost Forgot to Post Mine....
First and Only Trip Last Year:
I lost my Luggage for 5 days but that was later recovered minus the Credit Card and ATM Card, that was the fault of Cathay Pacific Tho

I did have a bottle of Astro Glide Lube go missing at some point so perhaps it was the Maid or a Guest
I knew that was Good Stuff

I had an aftershave stolen years ago but I can't even remember who took it. I'd forgotten all about it till now. It was a fake anyway! Left a couple of mobiles in taxis years ago when they were cheap... lost an umbrella or two... never lost my temper or my cool, though... that's probably the most important thing to keep when in Thailand.

EDIT!!! - I just remembered something...

I did have two paperback books stolen from outside my friends apartment door. I'd left them there thinking that they'd be worthless to any Thai person. I was wrong... they'll steal your greasy comb if you let them, so now I'm just more careful!

Many years ago when I was young and nieve was pick pocketed at 3am on the beach Pattaya getting a smoke off 2 creatures of the night... seems I never learn because after drinking to much in BKK years later and taking 2 LB freelancers back I woke up in the morning and later found my after shave and hair brush gone

On a good note, I lost my mobile and a couple of hours later went to use it, suddenly cold sweat and panic !!! I used the girlfriends and the taxi driver from earlier answered and brought it to me...... restored all faith.

I was staying in the majestic grande and I forgot the pin for the hotel room safe, had to call the front desk to send someone up to open it, which they did and I never took my eye off the girl from the front desk who was opening it and when I counted the money in the safe there was 2000baht missing.

Its still a mystery till this day

On a buying trip to Chatuchuk Market ( small business) had the shoulder bag zipped open and wallet stolen business money, passport, credit card all gone in a heart beat. Girl friend says I try to tell you market no good to much mafia. She will not set foot in that market.

I cannot blame Thais my own fault, since I have never lost or had anything stolen before that or since then.

I left my phone in the taxi one morning but a few min. later the driver returns it to me in the visa line at Burma Embassy and he would not take a tip. The girl friend left her purse with passport in a taxi after trip to Laos, driver had his relief bring it back to hotel we were staying at. He refused tip but I pushed several hundred baht into his shirt.

I only wear a watch and my camera goes into shoulder bag when not in use no need to advertise.

I think most Thais are inherently honest but it is just like anywere else you have people who will rip you off because thats what they do for a living.

will all the americans please stop carrying their bloody life savings, passports, credit cards etc around in bloody bum bags and shoulder bags while walking around a feckin third world country (to be honest, even in a first world country, a bum bag is just screaming out "please rob me")

I would consider robbing you myself as a matter of principle

                            wake up!!
                            No honey, no money!!

                              1. I am an American...

                              2. I have no idea what a "bloody bum bag" is...

                              3. My life savings, passports, credit cards, etc., are safely tucked away in my bank in the USA or my hotel safe...

                              4. Fuck you...

                              Cheers,
